How high should an electric fence be?

Hi I am planning to get a quarter horse next year an we have an electric fence around our pasture which we used for sheep and cattle(we no longer do) it is about 3' tall if not higher.
Is this high enough?:?

Probably needs to be at least a foot higher, maybe 2 feet more just to be safe.

We use a single strand of electric polyrope at the recommended height of 3' (chest high). I know it looks low, but we've never had a horse mess with it or get out.

No, 3 feet is more ideal for miniature horses. You will want at least four feet. However I recommend 5 - 6 feet.

I say 4 foot. That's about what ours are, but we have wood. PaintHorse, I can see a single strand at 3 foot being extremely dangerous ... I hope your tape is very wide ... I would use at least three, like the wooden boards.

^^^ It's 1/4" white polyrope (not tape) and I know people that don't use it don't believe it, but 3' is the recommendation for horses. We do have a 2nd strand at about 1' in areas that have had foals. For horses that respect the fence, it really does work and is safe.

Originally my temporary electric was only 3' high. Now I have permanent wooden posts and its 4 foot, 4 strand electric fence tape.

It really depends on the horse. One of mine, my appy, is so respectful of the fence, that even if I take the fence down, she will just stare at where the fence was, and will not go through until she sees me go through safely, or I walk her through to show her. My QH would barge through any fence if it wasnt electric whether it was 3' or 17'! I would suggest it be electric if its only 3', which I am sure it is if there were cattle/sheep in there before. Ideally, 4-5 feet would be best.
