What are some exercises I can do with Hunny to build her up for preparation for dressage lessons? I have no idea what to expect! Just some basics for now. We are doing lunging and ground work every 2 days, with a little refresher lesson of the ground work every day before I ride her. But I have no clue what to do as far as working with her once I'm on her :?
If you're starting dressage lessons soon, I would suggest working on your transitions for now! Make sure she is responsive and isn't rushing through your hands, and vary them enough so that she doesn't start anticipating them. Also, start doing a lot of circles and figure-eights and such, making sure that she is balanced and listening to you the whole time.
However, once you're start your lessons, you're going to learn A LOT! Take it a day at a time and keep an open mind :)
Just wait for the lesson. With the good trainer I bet you'll have lots to work at between the lessons. :)
Lessons won't be starting until late August/early September :/ so I want to do some basics with her now just for she and I's sake. I will work on transitions and balance then :) that is what I have been doing for now anyways! Tonight we will attempt to canter in the round pen in a balanced manner without counter cantering the whole flippin time lol
CW, the problem is if you do exercises incorrectly you'll have to re-train the horse anyway. I'd just keep riding the way you do, do lots of transitions (walk - trot, trot - canter, etc.), may be some uphill work (if you have hills) to build the top, etc.
Also "101 Dressage Exercises" seems to be a very nice book. I looked at it in Dover just other day, thinking about ordering it.
Well, I got Hunny to collect correctly and well last night for the first time, and we are working on yields from the ground to build up to me on her with yields and she is doing excellent. Personally I think she's going to hate me for making her do dressage but oh well lol shes much to gung-ho about going and jumping and such. We are sticking with ground work and basics at the time. Just things we need to know so we can learn more :)
Personally I'm not big about ground work but to each own. As for "hate" you never know. I have qh bred for ranch work, and she hated cows, but seems to enjoy the ring work.
well hunny gets confused if we don't do it on the ground first. i never did a lot of ground work with my other horses until i got her lol they just seemed to get it right away, she on the other hand, doesnt.
I'd start working on the bottom of the dressage training scale- rhythm and relaxation. Work on getting your horse moving forward, maintaining a steady tempo, and being happy and relaxed while doing it. I wouldn't worry too much about collection (which is actually at the top of the training scale) or lateral work just yet.
