I want him to lay down
I really want to teach my horse how to lay down!! Any one have easy ideas?
Don't do it.. It's really dangerous:) I wanted to as well, until i did research..
not a good idea IMO
It's not that dangerous unless you're on the horse and he decides to lay down.
There are a ton of vids on YouTube to give you ideas how to go about it. However, you should have total respect and trust from your horse before teaching it.

that's pretty much what i mean, and if your not that experienced in horses and what not, i was on a horse before, and it just tried to roll on me.. lol
I was thinking of teaching my pony this 'trick' he lays down all the time but I'm not sure how to teach it? He is just my mare's companion - I'm starting to teach him agility and some silly tricks just for fun. But I'm not sure how to teach lay down?
Be prepared for your horse to consider that as a way to get out of work.
We had a forum member on here that taught her horse to lay down and bow and it seriously backfired..
Learning to be an effective and consistent horseman can be a "neat trick" too.
This pony really doesn't need to work he's really just a companion - I'd love to teach him some fun things. But I'd like to teach him the correct way so it doesn't backfire. Saying a horse will lay down all the time because you taught them that trick is the same as saying a horse will only ever walk backwards because you taught them to back up. They wouldn't continue to lay down when you didn't ask them to if you got after them I'm sure. And for a pony who doesn't need to ever do anything I don't see why not teach him some fun stuff to keep him thinking.
I've taught my gelding to lay down. Never backfired. I never taught him a cue for it though.. Only does it with the rope. Rarely do it also.
While its not a trick I would teach a riding horse or a large horse because of the stress on joints. I also don't really see the point of it; however, thats just me.
I have heard of folks clicker training a horse and then hosing the horse off and clicking when they went down to roll. I don't know if this would teach them to roll or lie down. I would investigate that method because then the horse in theory controls how they lie down (speed and body position) and when they go down. The other option would be to clicker train and then when you find the horse lying down you click and treat that.
I would ask how big this companion horse is? The size could influence how you teach the trick if you use a conventional lying the horse down method. Which can be very stressful for some horses. If you teach them do lie down as a reaction to pressure I can see how a horse would lie down when you got on them. I heard of a horse that was taught to give to pressure so well that when the person got on for the first time the horse lied down.
Again, its not something I would do. I think there are better/more interesting tricks out there. Something like a freestyle dancing with the horse could be interesting.
