I have a few questions on colic.
What starts colic? Is it true that they can kick them selves to death? What are the chances of a horse getting colic?
Thank you for helping!
There are many reasons for colic; it's not just one thing that can trigger it. Some horses are uber-sensitive to weather changes, and that can bring on colic. Some are sensitive to feed changes, some can colic because of dehydration, illness, or some for what appears to be no reason at all.
The best way to try and avoid it is to make sure your horses always have something in front of them to nibble on, clean water, and mineral blocks out where they can get to them.
I've never heard of a horse kicking itself to death, whether or not it had colic. If their stomach or intestines rupture it's more likely due to a twist somewhere, than them kicking themselves in the belly.
If you have a horse, you have a chance of them getting colic at some point during their life.
