Mice and ants
I just moved into a new house. Its great since the dogs a lot more room to move around in and I can keep them outside more. However, I've started developing a pest problem with mice and ants.
I'm going to try mixing borax with sugar and that should take care of the ant problem (will kill the entire nest)
But I don't know what to do about the mouse problem. Anyone have any suggestions? I do have 2 dogs so I can't use any poisons...
Traps? Sticky pads? Hit them with a broom? LOL!
Good luck, I hate pests.... >.<
Get a cat.
Ahhhh... Good old field mice! I don't think I ever lived in a house that didn't have a problem with field mice when I lived in Iowa.
First off I want you to know that I am not asumeing that you have a dirty house...I didn't and still had problems with them.
Check to see what they are after. Yea, I know food but what are they eating. In my case it was usually either dog food or doggie treats. Make sure that all of that stuff is secure. I used large rubbermaid containers but I bought 40# of food at a time. Clean up EVERYTHING. The spilled salt, chip crumbs, that piece of dog food that rolled under the fridge...everything.(this is the sucky part  ) Then I would set sticky traps where the dogs cant get into them...I don't like the snappy traps but that's a personal preferance of my fingers and the mice can eat the bait without setting off the traps. If you figured out where the mice were comming in, you can use either steel wool or expandable foam or a combo to block their access to the house. Besure to check in drawers and closets ( I don't know how bad the mice are, I grew up hunting them so I have never had them in my clothes but it can happen really quickly!!!) You need to look for nests. If you find any get rid of them.
As for the ants. I like Ortho home defence max. It is like $10 for a gallon of it and after it is dry it is not harmful to pets. Plus it really does last all season...about 2 1/2-3months then I reapply. I kick the dog outside and spray the inside of the house. Then I keep the dog inside and spray the perimiter of the house and around all the doors and windows and don't forget the holes where the dryer vents out and the cable, electric get into the house. I have had excellent luck with the Ortho and it dries rather quickly (less than 30mins.)
Hope I helped! Good Luck!
Mousing cats, mousetraps, poison, or you could always go to a pest control company.
Even if the cat doesn't mouse, the smell of the cat in the house should be enough to dieter the mouse.
Look, Imma poet and didn't know it.
Unfortunately my bf is severly allergic to the oils on cat hair and breaks out in rashes if he holds my hand after I've touched a cat  . So that isn't an option.
I keep the dog food in a plastic tub after 6 (that's the last the dogs can eat) but I'll have to start putting it up when they are outside too... Maybe I'll have to start letting my JRT run around the house more... supposidly they are good mousers.
On the way to the store during lunch to see if I can find some mouse traps. I read about mouse traps that will zap the mice and kill them? I have issues with the sticky tape since then I would have to kill it myself which I'm a wuss about :? .
Um...It may be uchy and not really humane. But I don't like killing the mice stuck in the sticky traps either. So over the years I have (You guys are gonna flame me for this...) I have found that it is easier for me to put the trap and mouse in a wal-mart bag and take it outside where I drop a heavy brick onto the mouse. Ya know the grey ones with 2 holes in them. I know it is literally overkill, but I hate doing that and only want to mess with it one time.
I leave the brick on it for a while then take the bag to the outside trash cans. My hubby about pee's himself watching me. He say's I caught it I can kill it. He can kill a 30 point buck but won't off a mouse for me!
So when you are done laughing at me, you can wipe the tears from your eyes and rest assured that if you go with the sticky traps I have devised a sure fire way to get rid of the mousie.
Yet more confirmation that Dumas is the smartest woman in the world! lol
I freak out if I see a mouse, and FORGET about throwing out the mouse traps. There was one time that I heard a mouse hit one of those spring traps, and then heard it doing the croppy flop as it was dieing. ugh.. I had to leave the freeking house until my husband came home to throw it out.
They make finger friendly snap traps now. You press one end and it engages the other end. They work great. Peanut butter and pieces of pet food, crackers or cheese works good. A trick you can use is it bait the trap but don't set it. Get the mice used to it being a food source, then set it after a few days. I have also used sticky traps, and believe me you do not want to try to get it off of your doggie's face. I have had to use sticky traps, snap traps together. There is also a bait that you can get that will dehydrate them and kill them but they don't stink if they get inside your walls and die.
I use the Ortho spray to and it works great. I used an exterminator for over a year and still had ants and mice. Since I fired them and started doing the Ortho things have been much better.
You are not gonna believe this but one non toxic way to get rid of ants is to use aspartame, as in Sweet N Low! Sprinkle it wherever you see ants, it will take a day or so but they will be gone. They take it back to the nest and it kills them and since it is sweet they just love it! I keep some pet food in a rubbermaid container and get ants in it from time to time, not wanting to throw out all the pet food, I sprinkle sweet n low in it and within a week the ants are gone.
If you sprinkle cayenne pepper around your doorways or where the ants are coming in, they will not cross the line. Liguid dish soap does the same thing. Try it, it is quite amazing to observe.
I know it bothers some people to kill things but after having to throw away hundreds of dollars in food, clothes, linens, etc. It is WAR! If they come into my house they are goners :x
