Just thinking of my horse friends in danger
Have been watching the news and several fires have broken out in Oklahoma today. We have had a break in the weather and the high was only 105 today. But with that came the wind and with everything so burnt up and dry, it was like a giant box of kindling. Turner Turnpike is closed between OKC and Chandler, some areas being evacuated including some here by Tulsa. Anyone hear anything from the western side of the state?

Also, out of curiosity, how do you handle horse ownership and the threat of grass fires? Load em up or let em go?

Stay safe friends!

Hay Kelli, I'm in Stillwater and it's currently 109 F, right now. SUCKS! I'm so ready for a break in this heat.

As for grass fires, if they aren't real near and I have time, I'll load 'em up and move 'em out. If I don't have a lot of time, I'll load up the 3 most valuable and spray paint my phone number on the others and let 'em run.

I used to live in Souther California and Southern Arizona, these grass fires, while they move fast, are nothing compared to the wildland fires we used to go rescue horses out of. These fires go up fast, and go out fast too. Unless you get into a bunch of hay bales, then you got trouble for days.

Well with our fires in Colorado (we sadly lost both of our homes in the High Park Fire recently) people were doing both, loading horses up and/or releasing. Some people, who I'd like to have a few choice words with, left animals with no escape. I was listening to the scanner and they found a locked barn full of alpacas and their babies with fire approaching. They luckily held the fire off and got them out.

Pretty soon after the fire started the road was blocked to civilians. People would report their stranded animals to the Humane Society and they organized convoys to go up and get them when safe. Larger cattle herds were herded into safe areas as needed. Our neighbor had a pet cow that she spray painted her address on and released him. She was able to find him again.

I haven't heard of the estimate of animals lost but quite a few died of smoke inhalation.

Bridgertrot, that is just crazy. I hope everyone ends up safe and sound with their families.

I don't know if the one in Geary is still going. Its north of my grandma's place, and thankfully is separated by both I-40 and old 66. I told her that if it jumps the highway, get the heck out of there. It ain't nothin' but dead and dying trees and grass. I shudder to think what would happen if the wind would have died down.

I hope everyone within close proximity gets out safely and that these dang fires are put out quickly.

Wow Bridgertrot, I'm so sorry for your loss. Glad that you and your animals got out safely. Barrelwannabe, hope your grandma is alright.

Bridger, I've got a friend that lives up there where the fires are, she was pretty much a basket case during the whole thing, even though for ONCE, she wasn't in the path of the fire. She and I are both old alumni of So Cal wild land fires and she was burned out more than once down in Temecula. Neither one of us is fond of hot, dry, windy conditions.

Last year during the Texas Wildfires and this year we were evacuated and all we had time to do was grab as many animals as we could and "get the hell outa dodge" luckily our land wasn't burned much. We took all the horses in trailers and picked up goats and drive them in the inside and the beds of our trucks. It was crazy
