Reintroducing chicken into flock?
So our Rhode Island Red hen, Sima, fell ill a few weeks ago and began showing some kind of vestibular/neurological disease. We separated Sima from the flock and put her on antibiotics and dewormer. It seemed hopeless at first but she slowly began improving after a few weeks. She is now healthy and ready to join the rest of the hens (and that awful rooster...) again. However, the hens viciously attacked her and ripped off her feathers the minute we set her on the ground in the coop. We've tried letting the hens see her on the outside of the coop fence but they run over and try to attack her through the fence. We tried letting Sima and our most gentle hen visit with each other on more neutral territory away from the coop but the other hen attacked Sima anyway. We're not quite sure what to do now. Any ideas on reintegrating her back into the flock?
When I had to reintroduce a hen I used similar technique to introducing a new horse. Started with a shared fence line in this case a small section of the pen fence off. Once the hens stopped attacking the fence line I was right to add her back in. I supervised for a while but other then a few pecks they accepted her back.
