Skin Problem (Hot Spots?)
My German Shepherd has been getting scaly looking spots mainly on her lower back. I think they might be hotspots, but I am not sure...she continually itches them, making them raw. What is it and how can I treat it?

Your first step should be a soothing bath, followed by a cold water vinegar rinse. Then, depending on how bad, he may need antibiotics. Typically they are food or flea related. So...if he has fleas eliminate them, then switch to a high quality wheat free food with one meat protein. I'd spray the spots with vetricyn twice a day, and keep him cool.

Once fleas are ruled out as a cause of the ithchiness, you may want to consider adding fish oil to the dog's diet. My pittie had very dry, itchy skin when I adopted her, and would get occasional hot spots. Putting her on a high quality diet and adding fish oil daily has completely cleared up her issues. I use the Welactin brand which can be purchased over the counter at most vet offices. Fish oil can work wonders for keeping the skin properly hydrated and can (supposedly) have other benefits as well such as joint health, heart health, etc.
