So, in another thread (about breastfeeding, of all things) it came up about body image and weight and height. I figured I'd start a new thread instead of completely derailing a thread about something else.
I'm tall. 6' tall. For a girl, that's pretty tall. I have to buy pants at specialty stores. My husband is the exact same height as me, so I never wear heels - he says he doesn't care, but I just feel strange towering over him (and everybody else)!
My horse is only 14.2 hh - I suppose she's the equine equivalent of wearing flat shoes? (I wasn't necessarily looking for a horse that small, but her personality won me over! And before anybody gets too concerned about this giant girl riding a tiny little horse - we're within the "20% body weight" guideline)
Anyway, anyone else out there overcompensating? Any 4'5" girls riding a 17 h horse? Or are you perfectly comfortable in your own skin?
I'd love to be, I've been told over and over that being tall is a good thing, but I would love to lose a couple inches... 5'8" sounds perfect. Now to find a surgeon that can do that for me... :-P
 another 6' female here!
I actually love being this tall, as I mentioned in that other thread. And I like wearing heels. Hubby is 6'3" and doesn't mind if I'm taller, in fact he likes it a lot.
I don't usually have much trouble finding pants long enough as long as I stick to shops that carry long lengths, which a lot seem to here in the US now. Failbhe, I suspect you have an inseam longer than 36"! LOL
My ponies are 17hh and 16.2hh. My gelding, the taller of the two, is part Belgian so I don't feel big on him at all. My mare, while part some kind of draft, is a bit narrower and feels positively short to me when I get on her.
I am 5' 9" and three of our horses are about 14.2, 14.3h, the other is about 15.3 or 16h.
I have no issues with riding a smaller horse and I ride with a shorter stirrup anyhow, I don't have 6" of leg dangling below their bellies :)
I'm 5'1", and have always ridden short horses. 14.1 h to 14.2 h is my preferred height for them. My heart horse was a solid 14.1 h, and Casper is 14.2 h.
JJ is at least 15.2 h, and a friend who hadn't seen him for a couple of years thinks he may have gotten taller, which would make him 15.3 h. Not massively tall in the scheme of things, but when you've been riding small horses for 30 years, riding a bigger one can be quite the challenge! :-P
5'3 here and i prefer the bigger horses..i guess its my way of feeling tall and seeing from a different perspective. 16+h the better
my sister is only 4'11 and she prefers smaller horses.. she says she likes to be close to the ground. lol she sticks with the 14-15 h horses
5'9 with 14'3 qh. Never had issues with my height (well, it's hard to find a saddle and pants that fit the legs, but... :) ).
Cowchick - I DO have 6" of leg hanging below her belly! I know we look a little ridiculous together, but I try not to care. She's got an amazing brain and personality. If I could make her a little taller, I would - but hey, if I could do that, I'd just lose a little height myself! :-P
SpeedRacer - at first, Éowyn (my little 14.2 girl) felt small. But after a couple months of riding her, I went up to visit my parents and went for a ride on their 15.3 (ish, I'm guessing) mare - she used to feel 'just right' to me, now she feels huge!
5'2" and I don't pick my horses based on their height.
Just so happens the horse that suited me is 14.2hh, I had tried everything from 13hh to 17hh before I bought him.
Kitten... I hear ya, only I have the exact opposite problem. I had to have my stirrup leathers and boots custom made to fit my midget legs and I routinely end up hemming my pants.
I married tall... hubby is 6'3", figured SOMEBODY needed to be able to reach the cabinets!
I think I have some pics of me somewhere starting colts with that much leg hanging down! If you have a nice horse and you enjoy her...who cares!
I was pretty small as a kid, the smallest in my class. I had big dreams of being a jockey(Julie Krone was my hero!) Until I hit the 10th grade, then I was one of the tallest. So much for that idea! I did ride race mules for a very short amount of time because even though I was tall I only weighed about 105 in my late teens and early twenties. That was short lived, there is a reason why they have a hard time finding mule riders!
:D At least every other trip to the market, I come up on a smaller, older lady gazing up at something on the top shelf. I always ask, might I help you with that? and they always comment, thank you and it must be nice to be that tall.
