Seeing LOTS of Pelhams in the Olympic SJ ring
FINALLY, NBC showed a significant segment of Equestrian!! Yesterday, I got to see the medal round of Jumpers. I saw a LOT of Pelham bits, one Kimberwicke and even, (I think it was a Brazilian rider/horse) a mechanical hackamore?!? I even saw both reins of a running martingale run through to a Pelham--didn't know you could do that!--and I KNOW that I saw a convertor used.
I'm a fan of the Pelham bit, but I haven't been following INatl showjumping. Is this a trend? I'd be interested in hearing from you Jumpers, and your opinions on this. Thanks! =D
WHAT!? They had the horses on and I missed it! Dang. I never get to see ANYTHING.
Ok. Rant aside, I've seen quite a few pelhams over the years. I used to use one on the big grand prix jumper I rode. He was STRONG (and I'm a big, strong person!) He worked well in it though. I also saw some at Horse Shows by the Bay, in MI. I lived not too far from there and would go down to see some of the grand prix.
I saw a heck of a lot more then just a pelham! Jumpers tend to get a little... well, "not traditional" in the way of bits. I saw what i thought was a more then average number of "hacka-bits", inluding Mclain Ward. Apparently he hates how "ugly" the contraption is but says Antares goes the best in it.
Same way with barrel racers. A lot of non traditional things over the years.
I have noticed a lot of pelhams as well.
I actually went to a show a few months ago and there was a lot of interesting bits on the jumpers. Saw someone riding in a Martha Josey Million Dollar Bit (It's a barrel racing combination bit)
I noticed quite a few contraptions that look like they where made in my back yard, and a few Pelhams but what took me by surprise was the HUGE number in reg. snaffles and bits on the lighter ends and LOTS of regular nose bands. I said going in all of the horses would be in figure 8's . Many where in flashes or normal. Very very few figure 8s.
I was pleasantly surprised from the type of tack majority of riders were in
