I swear this horse is completely accident prone.
I went to the barn today and noticed my horse's right eye was closed (not swollen) and it was watery with some white goop in the corner. I managed to get his eye open and clean it out with some water. After I cleaned it, he managed to open his eye and keep it open, and now it's just a bit red with an occasional goop.
Does this sound like anything serious? A corneal scratch or plugged tear duct?
I don't play around with eyes. I usually call the vet on that one. I have a couple tubes of 3-antibiotic and antifungal goop that the vet had given me to use...
He very well may have a scratch you can't see. I'd call the vet and at least pick up some ointment from them at the very least. It takes no time at all for a tiny scratch to become a full-blown infection that could cause permanent vision impairment. Better safe that sorry.
I'm going back tomorrow to check again and I'm having the barn owner check on it through the night. If it still is gross, I'll definitely call the vet tomorrow.
The barn owner did say that a lot of the other horses are starting this exact same thing because the back pasture is filled with ragweed. So that does make me feel a bit better. But it is better to be safe than sorry.
Certain weeds can cause irritation and tearing, but if he's keeping one eye closed for long periods of time, and not the other eye, that usually indicates pain of some sort, not an allergic type reaction. Hopefully it is nothing to worry about, but I am glad you are having him checked on. Fingers crossed that he is fine by morning.
So good news (:
I went today and his eye was open and dry. I did clean it again just in case, but it looks fine!
Definitely keep an eye on it, and I might still have the vet out to look it over. If there's a scratch, you probably won't be able to see it and will need the help of fluorescent strips to see it.
