Does anyone have any ideas of any halter/ground work that I could do with my pony, to get her to learn some respect anf just to bond with her, so we can be a better team?
I know join-up, but I've never tried it. I just want some simple excersises I can do with her
This isn't really 'ground work.' But I think just sitting with her every now and then when she eats is a great bonding experience. But some horses like to be left alone while they eat.
Join up is good but I found that it was a really nice experience teaching my horse to lunge properly. After allot of work he knows to go out to the side by himself and to walk on, trot on, canter on and whoa all with voice commands. We’re still working on stand still without having a snack...
You could also take her for a walk on her halter and teach her to walk, trot and whoa with voice commands. Teaching her to back up on command is also a good one.
What I do with a new horse is to hand walk them for a few days. I take them everywhere I go on the farm. Whatever I do around the farm the horse is with me. This gets them used to not only being with me but also familiar with the farm.. I like to do that from time to time as well with any horse. I may have them tacked up as well.
I'll use a 12' lead and if I have to use two hands to pick something up or move something, I'll tuck the lead in my belt (tuck - not tie) and do what I need to do.
Didn't I read in one of your posts that you had your pony for the past 10 years?
yes, I have in fact owned her for 8 years.. what difference does it make?
you always need to bond with your horse, even if you've had it for 20 years.
psshht. if your not bonded with your horse after 8 years.....
anyway, check out clinton anderson. he is a horseman who takes no disrespect.
what, so you can just go out, jump on your horse and ride, jump off and go home?
You have to spend time with your horse, even if you've had it for 10 years,
and I actually have bonded with my pony, I want some excersizes to enforce that bond and to work on her ground manners.
I think its a great idea. You're right, its always a good idea to bond with your horse. Have you tried lunging her before? That's a common form of groundwork, thats fairly simple to do. I find it teaches them about respect. A great thing to have when you're doing groundwork is a treat in your hand. (Not when lunging though). Lead her in hand with a lead rope and gradually undo the rope from the halter while you are still walking with her, if you have a treat, she'll still follow you without the lead (except I don't do it with treats at all). I do this with my horse and I can get her to follow me very closely without a lead at all. Its really cute. :P Make sure to praise her with a treat or a pat and "good girl" when she does something well. I don't really know a lot of groundwork but there are some suggestions.
thank you Jubilee!
Yes, just recently I started lunging her, and I went out today to lunge, and it went very well.
Snapple always follows me lol, even if I'm in the arena and go to get something, she's right there behind me, even when I don't have a lead rope on her.
I was trying to get a few pictures of her yesterday, and I tried to walk farther away so I could get her whole body in it, but just kept following me. haha it was cute.. she's like a puppy.
and BTW, I saw pictures of your horse Jubilee and she so beautiful!
No, I meant it would be pathetic if you hadnt bonded with your horse after 8yrs (in that case it would mean that you just jumped on rode, then jumped off.)
BUT now I see what you mean by wanting to strengthen your bond, so Im not saying you're pathetic or anything.
Hope that clears the air 8)
