From racing trot to slow jog! YES!
I finally got my boy to jog today! Usually, when asked for a trot, I get a full out extended racing trot. We have been working on slowing it down for a while now, and he was getting much better, but today it was like a switch flicked in his brain, and he realized exactly what I was asking. We managed to go around the whole arena in a nice flowing jog!! To be honest, I didn't think he would ever be able to jog so smoothly, as he naturally has a very choppy gait, but he sure proved me wrong today. It was so nice and relaxing.
Today was definitely the best ride ever! He was so responsive and seemed to know exactly what I wanted (instead of being a butthead like usual). Now I just have to think about what I did differently that caused him to react so well. I know I kept him on a tighter rein than usual, which he seemed to really like feeling the contact more so than when I have him on a loose rein. Time to sit down and really analyze what we did today so find out what made him so responsive and willing to work.
I'm just so happy with today's ride!!

I'm working on the same exact thing with Dancer. I get so excited when we can get a nice jog. My trainer always tells me to loosen by back and tighten my abs if that helps any.

Thank you for the suggestion. My back was more relaxed than usual, so maybe that helped. I will remember that for next time :).
My BO believes all standardbreds are only good for racing and pulling a cart, so we're out to prove her wrong. Lol He still has a long way to go, but today he showed me what he is actually capable of.

Yay congratulations! Its nice when things click. Try to keep the momentum going and I think the standardbreds seem to figure out what you want and keep doing it.

I certainly hope I can keep up the momentum! I think it may have been the combination of more contact, a relaxed but assertive posture, and a driven attitude (as I had a 'let's do this!' attitude today instead of the usual relaxed 'let's try our best' one).
