This picture is a few months old, but really- my position hasn't changed much at all. I know my leg slides back, but my horse has NO BARREL!! Nothing to hold onto and I don't know what to do short of jamming my leg forwards and locking up my ankle...
Yes it's supposed to stay at the girth traditionally. However I was always told if your horse would disappear and you went strait down how would you land? On your face? On your butt? Or standing? You need to land standing no matter what position your in. You have wonderfully movement in the hips so jamming your leg forward will mess up everything.... Try relaxing unto the stirrup (ball of the foot on the iron) and lengthing your heel. If your leg is solid you will be right back where you want to be you look good
I gues I would probably land on my face in this picture lol... So if I just relax my heel which would give me a more "heels down" feeling, then problem solved??
Correct. Jumping is all about balance and moving with the horse if your horse has a problem like no barel or with my horse chipping in, you have to learn to ride the problem. Riding is nothing but reacting to the horse. The only way you can react is if you can feel the horse be balanced and be in a solid position...
Heels down eyes up relax and wait for your jump. Your horse will do the rest you just have to be balanced stay centered and react to what your horse give you.
I thought this might help you, this is a picture of me riding a friends horse in a clinic.
Even though my leg isnt at the girth look at where it is compared to everything else.... you can see my heel is down my eyes are up im soft but solid and the horse can stretch over the jump.
where would i land? face?Butt? or Standing?
Personally I would rather land rolling lol. Your position is really very good. Your upper body is just wonderful, you are allowing the horse to jump in a very nice form. Just the heels down a bit would finish it off. That is a fairly scopy fence and the horse is making a nice jumping effort that you have allowed. There is a line in your body, shoulder, hip, heel. There is a cool site you should look into Judge My Ride. Post this picture and see what the experts say!
i would suggest doing a lot of no stirrup work. your stirrup leather should stay perpindicular to the ground when you are jumping. i totally feel your pain of having a horse with no barrel !
