Am I feeding him right?
Right now my horse gets a lunch that consists of Triple Crown Complete with rice bran, joint supplement, Suceed supplement(for ulcers), missing link for horses, and electrolytes. He gets hay in the morning and in the evening and sometimes i give him some hay scraps to munch on during the day. He currently needs to gain about 50 pounds, not much I know, but is what Im feeding him ok and will it help him with the weight? Is there anything else I should be giving him?
The lunch I feed him was recommended by his previous owners who had him on the same stuff, except for the missing link.
Oh and he is a TB about 8 and is rode 6 times a week for about an hour.
how much TC?
I have a 56oz scooper and he gets about 3 scoops , maybe a little less.
somebody correct me if I'm wrong...but I think to gain weight you should do frequent small to medium sized meals instead of one big one at lunch...also would be good for his gut since he has a tendency for ulcers (which I assumed since he is on an ulcer preventative). I would feed him 3 times a day.
hotreddun is right... more small meals is better than one big one. If you can, give him free choice hay.
Feed him the Triple Crown at least twice a day. Is free choice hay a possibility--can you just let him have all the hay he can eat, or not? If not, feed the hay 3 times a day until he picks up.
I would also add make sure he is getting the PROPER amount .... buy a kitchen scale at walmart and weigh the feed so you know how much he is getting
You can also go to Purniamills.com and they can help you pick the best feeding program for your horse. I used Amplify by them and my horse picked up weight in no time
triple crown makes a great complete feed.
my suggestion lies with the others, break the feeding up (at least to twice a day - three times is better!)
he'll be better able to process it!
