Posting at the canter
In the past few months I have seen a lot of people doing something that looks like posting at the canter when they are in stadium jumping. Why do they do this? I have really only seen it at the upper levels. The only thing I could think of was that it helped them keep a steady rhythm? Here is a video because I couldn't really explain it This lady does it in the beginning when she first picks up the canter
No idea what she was doing... adjusting her seat maybe? I will often get up into a half-seat or two point if I feel like my legs aren't under me like they should be. In all my experience, I've never heard of actual posting at the canter. o_O
She'd in a very shallow 2 point - the distance closing between her seat and the saddle is because of the movement of the horse in canter. She is standing in her stirrups and allowing the horse to move underneath her.
Polo players post at the canter. It's a rhythm and timing thing.
I haven't seen people in other disciplines or sports do it. Interesting.

I'd say she was just adjusting her seat. She did it a couple of times, not in the rhythm of the canter, then went and continued in 2 point.
Ok thanks :) I saw a few people (Phillip Dutton, Sally Cousins...) doing it when I was out this summer watching Intermediate riders go at an event. One lady did it the entire ride though. I was just curious and thought "they know what they're doing- maybe I'll take some pointers" :) When I tried both me and my horse were so unbalanced and awkward that I didn't try it again haha :)
Its actually a 3 point seat, and its a softer driving seat then say a full driving seat when you are HAVING to push your horse forward and up. When say your asking for a bit of collection, or a slower pace, your not going to do this in a two point up to a jump or obstacle. Your going to drop some of your weight into your seat and drive your horse forward while asking for a change in speed.

I agree with the above. It's a lighter driving seat. Just to touch down and remind your horse to move forward while using your seat as an aid rather than "motoring" the horse with your seat the entire time. Or constantly being in your half-seat (shallow 2-point), which can allow your horse get really flat at times.
Correct me if I'm wrong. But isn't the posting at the canter also used to get deeper into your heels? Especially when you are jumping around a course?

I post at the canter to work on my balance which helps keep my lower leg steady and for rhythm/tempo. It's actually really fun and gives you a heck of a leg workout. One stride up, one stride down.
