Thought you might be interested to see some Afghan horses
So, these aren't the greatest photos, but I had the chance yesterday to see some horses here in north-east Afghanistan, all of them awaiting the beginning of the buzkashi season - the weather's still too hot for them to play at the moment.

All stallions, all in pretty good nick (they should be, they're worth a serious amount of money here) and bigger than I was anticipating. All except the grey are Tajik horses, so bigger than the Barb-based Afghan horses like the grey.

If we ever do make it this far on the Great Horse Trip, I think our pony is going to develop a complex...

Barley and wheat chaff, in case anyone's wondering

The youngster, rising five. He won't start his training for another year.

So in the meantime he can just play with his feed barrel

I couldn't decide if I wanted to steal this one -

or this one (you can't see him very well because of all the people but he is seriously nice -

Although here not appreciating people standing in his space...

Not the most detail in this photo but look at those lovely short cannon bones

A back view of their rugs

They're pretty good, aren't they? I love me some stripes. They stay rugged up all day, supposedly to protect them against the sun and the flies, then they get to go naked in the evening and during the night. I'd have liked to spend some more time asking a lot more questions, but sadly we had to get back.
There was another big chestnut whom I liked very much, a sucker for ear scritches and who then tried eating my scarf... He'd have been my 'to steal' choice only he had a bowed tendon :-(
