Got bucked off
(Sorry, It's kinda long):-)
I had a gymkhana this morning, and my gelding and I were doing great on all the events until barrels. He'd made a really nice run so far, and right after the third barrel, I asked him to speed up by clucking to him. He sped up, and was fine for about five strides. All of a sudden, I felt him tense up out of fear, and he did a half-stop, and started bucking. I flew over his shoulder and hit the dirt, hurting my ankle and shoulder. He bolted, running around the arena madly. He' NEVER tried to buck before. A lady caught him for me, so I got back on him and re-did the pattern at a trot. He was perfectly relaxed, and was well behaved. Even though I rode him after I fell off, I took a big blow to my confidence. Any advice?:-(

Glad your ok! And good for you getting back on and going through the pattern!
How do you know that it was a fear response? What caused the fear?

One of the people at the gymkhana told me that he could have had and accident during a past barrel race, and he remembered it and freaked out. I don't know any of his past, and it was my first time running him on the pattern.

How long has it been since he has been ran?

Have you looked at the tack you're using? there might have been something that pinched him or slide a certain way which caused pain? has he had his teeth done recently? if its something that persists, I would look at getting a vet out to make sure everything is ok.

With out seeing it happen and not knowing your horses history. I would be more inclined to think it was more of an excited buck if it had been a while since hes been opened up.
Sorry about your shoulder, ankle and confidence... :(

This is the first time He's been run in at least three years, if he was a barrel horse before his past owners had him.

Thanks. :) He just had his teeth floated a month ago, and his tack fits him well.

How do you know it was fear and not something else?
Have you personally run him in barrels or did his owners run him the last time? If it was his previous owners, they could have been reselling because he bucked at barrels.
Not all bucks are bad. Some bucks are because the horse is just excited and want to express their feelings, even with a rider on his back. He could have been excited and threw in a buck to show it.

His previous owners did not use him as a barrel horse, and I don't know who owned him before them or what he did before they got him.
