seeking input on my drought feed plan.
I'm sure that many people are in the same boat as myself, here in Missouri we have had a horrible drought this year making hay extremely hard to find and very expensive. At this point we are still trying to buy hay, but at this point will not make it through winter feeding our normal amounts of hay, we are looking to drastically stretch our hay. The below feeding plan is one that I am looking to start feeding some of our hard keepers and I would love any thoughts or ideas anyone may have.

OK for a 1,000 lbs. horse that needs to put a bit of weight on, I am looking to feed 15 lbs. a day in roughage. 10 lbs. in hay, and 5 lbs. in beat pulp (which I have read each pound of BP is equivalent to 1.5 lbs. of hay). Also feeding a horse feed made by our local mill that includes oats, a bit of corn, alfalfa, and soy oil, 3-4 lbs. a day.

If you're trying to get weight on, start now. Easier when it's still warm. I'd try to keep the grain low, as, depending on the work load, it is not the best choice. If you can get alfalfa pellets, add those. And for safe energy, rice bran.
Don't know your situation, but if possible give the beetpulp and alfalfa pellets during the day, in several smaller meals and save the hay for the night. He shouldn't be without anything to chew on for hours at a time.
you also might look into slow feeder hay nets, as they stretch eating time.

I know some people who fed soaked Alf. Cubes and Beet Pulp....a lot cheaper and worked fantastic for them.
