The Weird Things People Say About Color

I think I've heard so many color stereotypes it drives me nuts, but I bite my tongue. Today I heard though "palominos are better performers than duns" O.o I beg to differ that one as an owner of a very load clearly dun horse. Also duns I guess just naturally are bigger boned? Nah I think breeding causes that one. Of course these aren't the only ones I've heard. But it just boggles my mind everytime I hear a certain color of horses classified like that. I don't really care what color my horse is. A Quarter Horse to me is just a Quarter Horse, the only things that classify it are it's breeding. So my half rant of amusement over, what great things have you been told about certain colored horses?

lol..there are lots of old storys. some people swear palaminos and albinos are crazy, bald faces, white legs need to avoided. same for blue eyed horses they will go blind. all grey horses get tumors (not so ) all appys are crazy and mean,
just silly things .

I have heard all of those very same statements. When people have asked me what the best color horse is for performance I say Chestnut with 4 high whites and a big white face, also, they must have a flaxen mane and tail. When they look at me as though I have named something very difficult to get I say " The only color that can beat that in a horse show is a solid black horse with a white mane and tail" I just let them think about it for awhile.

I think one of the most fantastic thing about all the different breeds and colors is that there is a perfect horse for everyone.

While Appy's are not for me, I have seen some stunning ones. I would never say I would never own one either but man, do I know a lot of people that wouldn't. It seems so wrong to judge an entire breed of horse or color of horse. Get what you like and don't worry about what others like. Let them get their own favorite.

when i talked to someone about my Appy, he had pulled a stunt with me or something like that.
she asked me: why do you think the Indians had lost the war?

I know Appys are not horses for anyone, but to asume that they are the reason of a lost war??????

I have heard that chestnuts are crazy. They are "red heads" so they are wild. I think its the same issue as breeds. Some representatives of some breeds are hotter than others. I think some members of a breed get a bad reputation. Still beauty, like brains is in the eye of the beholder.

Like Rookie, I've heard dodgy things about chestnuts.

Its not always crazy, but in the stories they always have attiude, temper, or are nuts.

I'm sure its purely coincidence but I think every chestnut I've ever met has had one of these. Rosie, my mare, is a chestnut and she has a real personality and attitude about her, and she's just at the beginning of the list.

Compared to bay horses (my faves!) who, while not neccisarily dull or anything, seem to be more stable and amiable in my experience.

I wouldn't turn a horse down because of their colour (thats a lie - i'd probably turn down a grey but for practical reasons) but I'm not 100% convinced that colour doesn't influence it in some way.

I've also heard Appaloosa's are crazy but I think its just because of their eyes (you generally see the whites more), and not because of their personalities.

But we all agree that chocolate labs are denser than black labs and yellow labs take an extra year to mature mentally... Right?

Haha I knew an old cowboy who asked me "Why do you supposed indians rode appaloosas to war?" I replied "I don't know, why?" and he answered "So they'd be angry enough by the time they got there to kill someone!"

my trainer will not buy a "red headed" mare. It's been so ingrained in all of us from riding with her... that i literally skimmed right over the chestnut mares when i was looking to buy. hahaha!

"Four white socks and a snip on his nose, tan his hide and feed him to the crows."

An old saying, stating that horses with four white socks will have soft feet, won't perform as well, etc.
