Reining to WP?

Hi there,
I have a fairly nice and willing reinng horse, I was told by someone that he would do good at WP? I actually don't know much about it, can someone give me the run down and pre-requisites for being good at this discipline?
For example, what's typically asked for at a beginner/novice level?
Also, if I wanted to try my hand at it, would my reining saddle be suitable?
Thanks!

The thing I love about reiners is their adjustability. My mare can go from a reining pattern to a Western Pleasure class and do great in both. She was never trained specifically for WP, but her years of reining training have developed a horse that can jog like a WP horse or extend out like a hunter.

A reining saddle will be fine. I prefer to show in my Tex Tan reining saddle over a WP saddle.

Look up Western Pleasure on YouTube to get a feel for what it's all about.

Thanks! That sounds good! Yes, I was thinking my guy could do just fine jogging along....I'm sure he'd think it was a holiday after running reining patterns!

The class is judged on movement. A reiner likely isn't going to have the movement the judge is looking for.

Well that's a pretty open comment don't you think 'Go appendix'?? It really depends on 'who' that Reiner is, and 'how' that Reiner moves......not 'how' you think my Reiner moves, nor anyone else's horse.......not meaning to sound rude here, but you made a generalization......

Sorry GoAppendix.....in all fairness your comment was kind of negative and lately I've been trying to keep the circle of positivity flowing.....if you get my drift....

Depends on the level of showing you are wanting to do,at a local show venue probably do ok,but at the breed show level not very likely:-(.Your horse would have to show some of that natural WP movement & have more training to be finished as a WP horse, there is more to it than a horse that can maybe W/T/C slow...

It isn't negative to say a reiner likely doesn't have the movement for western pleasure. It is the truth. If this upsets you, stay out of the pleasure pen.

I personally show my gelding in both! Granted, we are only at the local level, but there are a few judges around here who like the reining lope better than that WP thing. haha Just remember to have FUN! It's what showing should be all about, but if your horse is showing signs he doesn't like it, switch to something else! Because a pissed off horse leads to a pissed off rider and then nobody wins! :D

No, GoAppendix, you're comments don't bother me in the least, they are coming from an 'anon' on a horse forum....I could care less about when people choose to be martyrs to their sport and make negative remarks over the internet just because they think they can get away with it......

Everyone else, thank-you for your helpful, insightful comments....and yes it's all about having fun! (so true Ethan) If your not having fun or have become a sourpuss perhaps you just shouldn't be doing it, the same applies to giving advice.....I just ignore those people......
