Raw, irritated girth
I have an ongoing problem with my mare. She has some skin irritation around her girth area. There are two patches where her coat has been rubbed off (and grows back white) and the skin underneath appears to be a bit pink,irritated...eventutally becoming dry and flakey after a few days.I stopped riding her for two weeks to let it heal. I bought a sheepskin cover for her girth and rode her for less than an hour today. Afterwards I notices the patches looked raw again?
Could it be a fugal infection? Could i be overtightening her girth? Should I buy a new girth? The one I have is supposed to be excellent. Can anyone reccomend a good chafless girth?
these might help
I had the same problem with my gelding. Neoprene is amazing! There's no way it can cause a rub, at least not in my experience.
It could be because of the way the girth is shaped, in which case buying a sheepskin cover won't totally eradicate the problem.
This is the girth I use, it's really amazing and hasn't once caused any kind of discomfort for any of my horses.
Soft Touch Girths. I think they are neoprene. I use one on Willy...never any probs :)
My friend used the sheepskin covers and it made it worse. She had success with the neoprene and the cotton strings (western). I don't know what the comparable for english would be if that's what you need.
Also, once the skin is healed (not raw) vinegar applied daily will help to toughen his skin.
