Starved pregnant mare please help!
I just rescued a pregnant mare about 2 months ago. She is gaining weight, but really slowly. She is only about 4-5 months pregnant, but her stomach is huge! The baby is getting all of the nutrients, and im worried she is not gaining enough weight to keep up with the baby. Right now i am feeding her Legends mare and foal and she is getting 2 peices of timothy hay 2xs a day. She only shares her pasture with one other mare so she has access to grass 24/7. I am wondering if there is anything else that i can do for her to help her gain weight before the baby arrives. Is there any weight builder that anyone recomends? Also, I want to know if anyone else has been in this sort of situation, and had a good experience in the end. Was the baby alright? Was the mother able to nurse the baby for all 4 months? HELP I NEED SOME ADIVICE! I FEEL SO OVERWHELMED!
Please only respond if you have useful information.

Hi, welcome to the forum:-)

First of all, 4 or 5 months pregnant isn't very demanding yet. The last trimester is.
Since she is almost starved but already has access to pasture all the time (provided there is enough palatable grass), I'd switch from Timothy to alfalfa. Make sure she'll eat it and not share it with the other mare.
you don't say how much mare&foal she gets, that would be helpful.

she is getting a full scoop of grain and it is being watered down

Stabilized rice bran and the recommend weight in grain as well as enough hay will put the weight on quick. Are her teeth good?

Yes, her teeth were just done. Thanks :)

A "scoop" can be anything....sorry.
Sounds like she is getting the grain only once a day?
If at all possible, several, at least 3 to 4 times smaller portions will have a much greater effect than one or two big ones.
Then add the rice bran.

So, with alfalfa, several smaller meals and rice bran you'll be good to go.
If she still doesn't gain sufficiently I'd have a vet out and have her checked out, bloodwork done to see if there is any other issue besides pregnancy.

she gets feed 2xs a day and hay when she gets grain plus more hay in between her feedings a scoop as in 2 or 3 cans of food

I meant to say that earlier

Sorry, don't mean to nitpick, but you should really weigh one serving to know exactly if its the right amount. Example: Nutrena pelleted feed weighs about 5 oz a cup, same type of Purina weighs 7 oz. Straight grain is even more different.
The feed bag should have weight recommendations on it, once you know how heavy your scoop is, you can adjust to make sure she gets the said amount.

No its not nitpicking! I'm new to taking care of pregnant mares and everything helps! thank you so much! I usually feed my horses based on the tags on the feed she is getting the recomended amount her scoop is about 3 qts and because she is so underweight that is the amount she should be getting right now. When I got her she was only a 1 on the Richter scale she still has about another 400lbs to go until she is up to the normal weight
