My Reining Adventure
I too have just begun my reining journey. I’ve wanted to do it for so long, growing up my parents wanted nothing to do with my ‘horse habit’. So, now that I’m old enough, working and so forth, I felt it was time to focus on me and my life’s ambitions, which really boils down to reining. I’ve never shown, but have been to a few schooling shows recently to get myself and my horse used to the commotion. I’m self taught, but my trainer has been encouraging and was rather surprised at my being self taught – which felt good to know that I was doing things right. For years now I have trained and sold horses; mainly rail to trail horses. I get them collected, soft and supple for in the arena and the trail. I think I do a darn good job with these horses and I am very grateful that I have been able to find them awesome, loving homes where they are utilized and the owners are happy. Training has filled the void of me not being able to do reining and such, but I’m tired of dreaming about it - so off I have gone on my journey – I took the plunge, and I’m happy!
As of now, I have taken one lesson, and it was fun, for that I’m glad. He asked many questions about my horse and once again was surprised to hear that I had purchased my gelding as a greeny and that I had continued his training – made me quite happy that he liked my horse. Anyways, he thinks my horse will be a good starter for me in reining. I’m excited!
So far in our first lesson we worked on forward motion as well as our spins, we’ve got the forward motion, but our spins – well, they are a work in progress. My next lesson is Oct. 13 as I have a few family things to do these next few weekends. I plan on starting this to be able to, one, track my progress and two, get input from others. I plan on having pictures and such once I get further along, but for now, I just want to write to give myself something to look back on.
Thank you all for humoring me in my newest aspiration!
My Gelding Crescendo and I:
Yay! This sounds so great! Your journey sounds inspiring, keep on reining, the whole experience will be awesome by the time that you are out there, sliding, stopping, and showing, you might be able to continue your 'train and sell' routine, except taking 2 yr. old fillies and colts and making them broke show reiners in 2 years! If you have a passion for something than the opportunities are endless!! The only thing that sucks is that since you have been a trainer, than where I'm from, you lose what is called your amateur card, or status, and you have to show agaist the pros and other trainer, regardless of your actual experience level in that discipline, so let's hope thats not the case for you!
