Great Ride, Bear Kill, Bull Down, Pics

Put a ton of miles on the horses over the last few days. Thursday we took some business associates from the UK on a ride, and then I stayed to hunt through the weekend. We passed on several bulls on Friday, but rode some serious miles.

We were riding off trail out of a real deep nasty canyon we had been hunting a big bull in and came across a bear kill/feeding site. The bull may have been injured by a bowhunter and died or just from old age,we couldn't tell for sure, but there was no doubt he had been dinner for a big bear. The tracks and scat were everywhere and you could clearly see where he had ripped open the rip cage to get to the good stuff. It was fresh enough that there was still a lot of blood, and the fur was still soft that was left.

Saturday we rode out from camp at 4am. We hunted several bulls and finally my brother that I was guiding(limited entry tag) who isn't much of a hunter got his bull. He had missed on 3 others earlier in the day. He is a competitive shooter who qualified for the Olympics, but he was afflicted mightily by buck fever. Finally he got his stuff together and drilled the nice bull you see him with in the picture. We shot the bull just before dark at around 7:30 or so and by the time we cleaned, loaded it on the horses and rode out we weren't back to the truck until 5am. It made for a long day and the horses were beat.

I included some pictures from some burns from the forest fires we had this summer that we rode by/through. Beautiful in there own way it is like being in a grave yard. The ash is 4-8 inches deep everywhere and the trees that are still standing look like ghosts. The devastation is so complete it almost seems unbelievable. The pictures really don't do it justice.

Its a great time to be in the mountains. The leaves are beautiful, the weather is perfect, and the elk are in full rut.

Beautiful pics, and it sounds like a great trip. Jealous!

I saw the burned areas of Yellowstone in Wyoming when we were there, so I know what you mean about it being similar to a graveyard.

But next year. All that ash is fertilizer for the grass to come. The elk will hang out in the burn units. I'm still finding a lot of elk on the unit I hunt in an area that burned 5 years ago. The funny thing is the elk still think they are hidden, But I can look across the canyon and see them ghosting thru the old dead burnt pines.

What unit of the state were you hunting on? And I can appreciate your all night work out. My friends kid shot a moose in 2010 and we didn't get the horses to the kill site until 7:30 and it was 10:00pm by time I got it cut up and loaded on the horses. Then a pitch black ride with no stars or moon back to the trail head.

Wow, what a beautiful elk. and the scenery is gorgeous. I am so glad there are still places to do that; ride and hunt in the wilderness.

Ugh. And here I am stuck in Virginia. No offense intended my fellow Virginians, but where those pics were taken is where I want to be.
