Opinions on these two Thoroughbreds
I am looking into these two thoroughbreds, they are both broke to ride. Both mares, but can't decide which one I like better. Anyone have any opinions based off conformation?
Broke to ride how?
What exactly have they done by way of ridden work?
Have you or will you be able to ride them yourself?
When were they last ridden?
The pics aren't really good enough to give conformation opinions but they are both in need of some serious feeding and attention to get them in good shape again not to mention worming, probably hoof and dental care
Are they freebies?
There are going to be a flood of cheap horses on the market with winter coming and many will be in OK shape - certainly better than these two
They are both retired race horses. Have been used on trails for a few years. Been standing for a year, but I rode both last night and they are both really nice.
They are both $200 with papers. The lady I board with knows the guy selling and she has a gelding from him who is super sweet and an excellent ride. The guy is selling, just because he can't afford to feed all his horses.
I've done the whole freebie horse thing before and I wont ever do that again. I was really sketchy on these but they seem really nice.
The fact that they were OK to ride after that long off says something for their attitude.
The second one looks to have something going on with its back that might worry me, the first one has high withers but a good fitting saddle would fix that - I dont know how that works if you ride western though (no experience of that)
I know that they are really cheap horses but I would still pay out for a PPE if I was you before going any further
They aren't going to put on enough weight soon enough to deal with a cold winter living out - everything you feed them is going to get burned up just keeping warm so you are going to need stabling at night and probably a stable blanket and some sort of a waterproof blanket for turnout to give them that bit of extra help until they are back in good shape.
They're both really out of shape, look like they could use a good deworming, and maybe some better hay. My TB is chubby, but doesn't have a hay belly.
Honestly, neither of them does anything for me. Both have very upright shoulders, and I'm not crazy about their necks. Can't tell a whole lot else about them from those fuzzy, too dark pictures, but it looks like the second mare has a slight roach. Nothing that would overly concern me, but it's there.
My TB can have a year off and still act as if he's been under saddle the whole time, so that's not unusual for ex-racers especially if they weren't particularly successful on the track. Like my JJ.
For $200 they're 'okay', but I'd like to see some actual conformation shots to get a better idea of their legs and overall look.
Not sure if I get the difference between a freebie and a $200 horse, apart from uhh $200 of course:lol:
Of the two, and more of a gut feel, I like #1 best, but really diffucult to tell much from your pics.
Well, this is my 'freebie' TB. Real dog, ain't he?
Could you tell us what your plans are for the horse? After all, if you just wanted a trail horse vs. a HJ competition horse vs. a dressage prospect it most certainly would make a difference to my mind. Not sure if if is the angle of the shot, but I don't care for how the second mare's neck looks.
I don't think that the second horse's back has anything wrong with it. It is simply lacking in fat and muscle cover. Any horses' back will have that "bump" there.
Honestly, TBs don't do anything for me, but if I had to chose from the two of them, I'd take number two.
With a good worming, good hay and some muscle, you'll have a very different horse.
Speed Racer- Gorgeous horse. I had a 12 year old tb mare that I got for free and she was the biggest pain in the butt. after 6 months of consistent ridding, she starting bucking and I never got to ride her again. I ended up selling her really cheap as a broodmare. I am just looking for a trail horse that rides english and western. I prefer western on our long trail rides, but english if its not an all day thing. They both ride both ways.
My barrel mare that I have was $1 and she isn't terrible, but she is pretty much a pain in the butt too. She has some bad habits that drive me crazy and overall, I'm pretty sure she just doesn't like me. She is great with my boyfriend, but I think she just has it out for me.
