Ok this is going to sound kind of strange but I want to put a tracking device on my horse. There have been several times that he has gotten away from me. Once a tree fell in a windstorm and broke my fence during the night and in the morning I woke up to no horses. They were almost 10 miles away and it took a very stressful day with lots of help to locate them. Another time I was out trail riding and he got himself untied and took off because he wanted to see what was at the end of the trail that we didnt finish riding on. That time it took 2 days to find him. I always worry while I am at work that he will escape somehow even though I have good fences and get hurt or very lost. There is a product on the market thats a tracking device for animals and I want to buy it but am wondering how to attach it to him. I dont like the idea of leaving a halter on him because he just rubs it off or he could get himself caught somehow. I was thinking of a neck collar like they use on picket lines...do you think this would work??? Any other suggestions?? maybe braid it to his tail???
This is a new idea! A tracking device for horses.
Are these things weather-proof? What about around his pastern? Or a collar around the neck could work too, there's just always the risk of getting a hoof caught.
Horse Tracking Software, GPS Chips for Horses
Not yet on the market but might be soon :-)
The mad inventor in me thinks that you could have a breakaway section that would cut the circuit, immediately alerting you to the removal (so either your horse is being stolen or it's become caught and broken free. Your phone (or whatever device reads the signal) would have the location of the last known position of the tracker so if it did get ripped off by your horse you wouldn't have to hunt for it all over the paddock either.
One issue will be battery life. The batteries on the one I mentioned above last 5-7 days which may or may not be sufficient depending on your needs. Another issue would be mobile phone and GPS coverage in the area - huge swathes of rural and even semi-rural Australia don't have mobile coverage unless it's very close to a residential area, for example.
I have a link for something at home.
What about a child's GPS? They're meant to be small, light and the battery lasts a while. A random google search found this: Spark Nano 3.0 GPS Tracking Device | Our Best Selling GPS Tracker
But there's keychain style ones which you could braid into the mane or tail.

I have already ordered the tracking device I am just wondering about the best way to attach it to the horse. it is about 2 inches round . It looks like it fits on dog collars so I was thinking maybe one of those horse neck collar things would be a good way to attach it to my horse, but I was looking for other suggestions such as the idea of attaching it somehow to his leg. He is an appy and he has no mane so I was thinking maybe braid it into his tail somehow ....but i dont know how well it would stay.
What about braiding it in to his tail, like in to the middle of a braid, then looping the braid around itself and securing it with an elastic? Unless he rips out that section of his tail, that ought to stay!
