I've been looking into breeding my mare Smarty for a few months now and wanted a little more advice before I seriously consider.
I've done done my homework about horse breeding and I know it shouldn't be taken lightly or done for fun. My mare is definitely worthy and I know what I want to do with her foal, it being either a filly or colt.
First question, My mare is 12 now and by the time she is in season she will be nearing 13. She is also a maiden mare. She is healthy but is she to old to have a foal without a higher risk of losing her?
Second. Is there any way to tell if she is still cycling since we are in the colder part of the year now?
I suggest getting her checked by a vet, they'll be able to let you know if she can safely have a foal. (: I've heard of much older horses having their first foals safely after that age, but I'm no expert.
Ask a vet. I've bred my 13yr old maiden this year and she's in foal, but I strongly would ask a vet first.
