Frog shedding off in one chunk??
Lacey's hooves have started some dramatic shedding action. Which I guess is good because they've seemed rather unhealthy to me (really big and almost "swollen" seeming +, as I discovered a couple of weeks ago, thrushy!). I've been spraying them daily with ACV which seems to be taking care of the majority of the thrush issue but now all her frogs are coming off hardcore.
One of her back frogs has actually separated all the way from her hoof at the tip back to where it gets really "meaty"/wide.
She seemed to be uncomfortable on her feet last week (immediately following the thrush discovery and the start of daily ACV) but now she's for the most part comfortable (she just went into official retirement due to a suspensory injury so she's in no way "sound"), hoof-wise.
Anyway, I'm assuming this is probably "ok" but not great (her hooves had an unhealthy summer so I'm not exactly surprised)?
Just checking. :)
Double post, sorry! I realized I have pictures of the hoof in question a la' Saturday just before it started crazy shedding:
Weird stuff at the back of her hoof...if someone could tell me what this is, I would be grateful as well.
It looks like she is due for a trim (her heels seem high) and then the farrier can look after the shedding frog for you and open up the central sulci in the back which is just a breeding zone for thrush. In the meantime, wash daily and apply your favorite thrush agent.
