So, I go to look for Zulu the other day and cant find him anywhere I looked here and there, traipsing uphill and down, over kind of rough, ankle turning ground.

Hahaha. I use a whistle. It probably helps that my mare loves going out though, may need to teach him whistle=treats.
It might actually help

Very beautiful property BUT you need a 4-wheeler.

We only have 22 acres, not near the woods you have, and I have a 4-wheeler. I'm not walking these hills looking for anyone; it's good practice for all of them to pony off the 4-wheeler or the tractor:-P

Ours is now 12 years old. We got a swingin' deal on it from a divorced guy that had to move into the city. It's like brand new and was never run thru the wringer. Took us three years to find something like that but it has paid for itself 100 times over.

My horses would love that much space! Zulu is adorable!

I call the horses up for feed twice daily. We rotate pastures, with the smallest being about ten acres, the largest almost a hundred. Being typical Arkansas countryside, that means hilly and plenty of woods. I have a four wheeler, but I'm lazy....I prefer they come to me. Since they associate "the" call with feed, they come a runnin' & I usually dispense some cookies after I've caught whichever horse I'm riding that day. Since they are fed WAY more often than they are ridden, it works every time.

Mine come to a horn (car or truck) if they are out of sight (8300 and 7500 acres), or to my whistle if they can see me and the wind isn't howling.

No way will I walk around looking for one.

Been there. Worst is when you spend 30 minutes looking for them in the field and then finally give up or decide to go back to get the ATV and they're all standing by the gate. :?

LOL...I feel your pain! Our horses are turned out on 85 acres. I have walked up and down and all around and there is no sign of my mare. She doesn't come when I call or whistle and I don't have access to the BO's ATV unfortunatley. I think the worst was the one day I went out and walked all over the property and couldn't find her and when I got back towards the barn, she was standing by the gate! Ugh!
