What do you guys wear during the winter? Boots (brand), pants, jacket? I live in Wisconsin and we get really cold winters here and the place Im thinking about leasing a horse from doesnt have an indoor arena. I am only planning on being in Wi for another year so dont really want to be buying 300$ winter boots, so am looking for what other do.
I usually wear my wellys (i've had the same pair for years, think they're dunlops) add some welly warmer socks or thermal socks and a normal set, if i'm riding i change em to my usual riding boots (cheap dublin pair hah)
These little boots are on my wish list:
Clothes wise, you'd be surprised how i can move hah, i wear leggings underneath my trackies, usually two pairs of sock's one being thermal, top half i have my t-shirt, normal jumper, ski jumper and my jacket, pair of leather riding gloves and a trapper hat (which i hate having to remove to war my riding hat, need to invest in a balaclava!)
The winters here arnt as cold as where you are but still I like these gloves cause they are quite warm and because of the pinky separated it makes it easier to ride. I'll also wear a headband kind of but on my ears since my helmet doesn't cover them :P I really like riding in the snow but sometimes it so cold! :P

Terramar long underwear, wool socks, Sorel boots (with winter stirrups), baggy jeans, wool sweater, small neckscarf, wool felt cowboy hat, wool and polypropelene glove liners under some gloves billed as "hockey mom gloves."
If it's even colder, I forget the jeans, wear knit pants over the polypropelene long underwear, and put my Carhart coveralls on top of that with a down vest under the coveralls. Or, I wear insulated overalls with my down coat that has coyote fur hood.
I can't work, or enjoy anything, if I'm just standing around shivering.
Where I live is stays around 45°. Not super cold but I rains non stop. I'm pretty intolerant of cold thought. I put leggings on under my jeans, wool and athletic socks in my boot, and put my carhart on over my sweat shirt. I might look like a big brown puff ball but at least I'm super warm.:) I will take our cold falls and winters over the heat we had this summer. I hate riding when its super hot.
Where I am in Northern Alberta, the winters get down to minus 40 and colder. Lots and lots of layers is all I can say, I have carhartt over-alls that are insulated, love them!
Between riding and teaching lessons I spent quite a bit of time in the cold. I've tried several types of winter breeches (tuffriders, ariats, kerrits, etc etc) and my absolute favorite are hands down, Kerrits Sit Tite n Warms. Definitely the best quality, warmth, etc. The only thing that I don't like about them is that they don't have pockets.
My other favorite bits of winter riding apparel are under armour compression tights/shirts. The tightness is kind of weird but it blocks the wind and keeps you surprisingly warm for such a thin layer. Kind of pricey to but IMO completely worth it. I have like 6 or 7 other pairs of thermals and I can tell a difference between under armour and other brands.
I wear the same pair of boots that I normally do but i also wear nice wool socks, SmartWools or the like. They aren't scratchy and machine washable.
I've found that lots of layers, with the top layer being windproof seem to be the warmest.
