Pellets

Hey
I feed my horses pellets as well as hay but the pellets I just give then in the morning. Also at the stable I work at a few horses get grain too. For my horses as well as the ones at work we have just given them the pellets as they are. However recently someone at work said to put some water on the pellets when we feed them. So I was wondering if I should be adding water to the pellets for my horses or if it's fine the way it is? Is this something that needs to be done or is it just optional?
Thanks a lot :)

Are you referring to hay pellets or a pelleted feed (grain)? There is often some confusion, so it's best to know exactly what you are referring to when we answer. For example, at times someone might say "alfalfa pellets" when they are, in fact, referring to alfalfa cubes - and there is a sizable difference between the two (the difference between a stick of butter and a pencil eraser). Some feeds are better fed wetted, for others it's not necessary.

I feed timothy grass pellets to my gelding along with free choice hay as he tends to be a hard keeper so I add oil to his pellets for the added fat. He seems to do very well with that combination. I was also dressing that with Weight Builder but have gotten his weight up nicely so we just stick to the pellets and oil now. I prefer personally to not feed the pellets dry.

Most pelleted grains are just fine fed dry unless the horse is prone to choke or has dental issues (in which case it should be soaked). Putting a little water on them can help any powdered supplements stick if the horse tends to sift them out.

I personally like to add water to pellets just to get extra water into the gut

Yep, I always add water to my feed pellets, especially during the winter because the horses don't drink as much as they do during the hot summer months.
