Breeding a Elite Barrel Horse
932 Attachment(s)
I've dipped my feet into this subject before. But now I'm looking more seriously into this since I won't be able to ride my mare next year...or maybe ever. She has been diagnosed with degerating bone/arthritis in her hock. It's NOT genetic/hereditary, it's from the bacteria infection that she got 2 months ago. She will be going through surgery to help scar the bone so the bone stops degererating and to shape it smoother to allow more freedom of movement.

I'm doing absolutely everything that I can for her to recover and hit the arena, but it just may not be possible for her. She is on Pentosan joint supplement (similar to Adequan) oral supplements and rest. We will consider hock injections. But I also don't want to put all the time and effort into training her, just to have her break down on me. It's not worth it to push her to run when she physically is not able to. So I won't be doing that.

My vet says she is 100% sound to be a broodmare and the weight of the foal will not cause her any discomfort. By the time I breed her, she will be sound for trail riding/pleasure riding, but may never be able to hit the arena. I'm highly disappointed because THIS was the mare for me. This is the conformation I wanted, the lines I wanted, and all because a little (well...HUGE) infection, I can't use her.

I'm attaching pictures of my mare and her pedigree. I am VERY familiar with the top lines in the barrel industry. I've done my own research, being a barrel racer, I'm very interested in these top horses. But I want others opinions on what is going to be the best cross conformation wise and pedigree wise for my girl.

I want to produce a DESIRABLE, ATHLETIC, and CAPABLE foal with a high resale value incase I ever needed to sell. (I mean really, who knows what my future holds, what if I die? My mom can't have 6 horses, nor does she want that many.) I don't breed often, actually I've only bred one mare and she's currently 7 months pregnant, but I'm not one of your half-ass backyard breeders. I get all the vet care needed for my mares, and so much more if anyone has been following Rumor's injury/illness thread. I wouldn't even be thinking about this unless I knew for sure that my mare can bring something to the table, so to speak.

Anyways, in your knowledge, and opinion, which stallions are going to cross the best with Rumor. Here is all her information, pedigree included.

Lil Bit Illegal, 2007 Brown Appendix Quarter Horse
15.1 HH & around 1200 pounds when at full weight
Illegal Runaway x Lil Bita Zevi

NOTE: These are not conformation pictures. She's not standing square and they aren't the right angles.

What I'm looking for in a stallion is a competitive, athletic, fast horse. Good bone, straight legs, 15-16 HH, Nice conformation. I want a stallion with a proven show record. Great pedigree is an absolute must.

Price at this point in time doesn't matter to me. Although I can't spend $6000 on a stud fee otherwise I'd be booked to Frenchman's Guy right now. ;-)

This is all still up in the air right now. I need to discuss it further with my mom. I am very nervous about doing AI, I've tried it once and got nothing but bills, but most of the really good stallions are way west of me and don't do live cover. Besides, I don't want live cover with this mare.

I have a list of stallions I've been looking at, but please post your ideas! I'm open to a lot right now!

Firewater Ta Fame - Martin Quarter Horses
Firewater Ta Fame is my top pick right now. Sired by Dash Ta Fame, and out of a Fire Water Flit mare, 2 of the best lines in the industry. He's proven in the arena, and his foals are hitting the arena and doing well

Firewaterontherocks, an AQHA Incentive Funded Stallion
Firewater On The Rocks is tied with Firewater Ta Fame. He's definitely proven. His foals are definitely proven. He is downhill in build though, not horribly, but still...Not sure on his height...

Rattlesnake Ranch Horse Sale - 8/28/2010
Frenchmans Boogie. He's definitely producing some nice looking babies. I'm not too keen on his build. He looks really...lean?...through his stomach. Wasp flaked? I don't know. But he is very handsome regardless.

French Too Fame
THIS is the type of pedigree I'm trying to go for. I'm not finding much of a show record but I really like the FG's/DTF crosses.

Barrel Horse World
Loving this stallion. Sire is Tres Seis.

Barrel Horse World
Alive N Firen

Barrel Horse World
Streakin Ta Fame

Barrel Horse World
Imfamous Fire

I would pick a stallion that could compliment your mare well. Her back is a touch long, so you may want to choose a stallion with a shorter back. Out of all those stallions, my favorites are:

French Too Fame
Triple Vodka Si(He is droolworthy)

But that's just my opinion :)

You are exactly right. Her longer back is a flaw and I've been searching for horses that do have a shorter back. I've ruled out many due to this alone. Firewater Ta Fame is built almost exactly like her, which is why I like him, LoL, But it may not be the best cross due to him having a slightly longer back and her having the same flaw.

He is very pretty, but having a long coupling will make it difficult for a horse to collect itself which is very important in barrel racing hehe. Good luck finding the right stallion for your mare! :)

I use the same Vet as Frenchmens Boogie. He's a stunner! When RSR brings horses to the Havard Sale they are always amazing! They put purple velvet on their stalls! Its a sight to see!

A DTF stud hands down. The Runaway winner/DTF cross is the #1 "magical" money winning cross in the pen. Ill be back later with stallion choices I think would compliment your mare.

I have been debating the same for Sassy, but people would rip my head off on here if they found out I bred an unregistered horse:P
