Will a Tipperary be good enough?
I KNOW the Tipperary vests aren't certified. Here are the reasons I'm still considering them, and I'd like you to tell me if I'm crazy or not:
-I want something comfy enough that I can wear it on most my rides, not just over cross country. I'm claustraphobic, so I don't think I can stand a boxy feeling vest all the time. I like the idea of Airowear, but...
-I'm poor. Tipperary's I can find used for fairly cheap.
-I only plan on doing lower-level eventing anyway (probably Training Level max)
So what do you think? I guess what I'm wanting to hear is "a Tipperary will be just fine! You will be protected enough for what you're doing!" However, I'll try to be a good girl and heed advice given to me
I ride in one and I love it. Ive fallen plenty of times and never had an issue while wearing it. I do novice up to prelim eventing
I was told that the reason they are not certified is that it is a puncture risk between the segments, which too me seems like a rather low risk occurance. If the other styles are uncomfortable you won't wear it so better a vest you will wear with a small risk then a 100% protective vest hanging in your closet.
I wear a tipperary and am happy with it.
I want a tipperary vest...
...I'm so bad :P I have a boxy vest but I can't breathe in it so I don't wear it much. I've worn it just enough to wear it in, and when I jump I always have it on, but I'm not jumping much at the moment and it's partly because I hate the **** vest.
The trouble is Tip vests here are stupidly expensive, especially considering they're not certified. I can get a certified vest for less than half the price of a Tipperary.
One of these days I will get one of the blow up air vests but they're so expensive that I'll make do with my boxy claustrophobic "can't breathe" thing for now.
Tipperarys also do not provide protection for say like whiplash but your back. They are useless. They bend therefore you can still end up with a broken back, bones, you name it.
Not to mention if you're broke why would you spend so much money when you can buy something new that's certified? Plus buying a used vest is about as useless as a used helmet.
I certainly wouldn't pay full price for a Tip when an Airowear is close in price yet certified. That's why I was looking at used Tipperary's. It seems my options are that, or this:
Ladies' Intec® Flex-Rider Body Protector* | Dover Saddlery
I tried that one on in the store. I tried to be open about it, but that vest is the most boxy of all boxy vests I've ever tried, haha!
I too own a Tipperary vest...it's all I could afford at the time as well, and a vest of some type is required to Event, at least in my area anyway!! I've fallen in mine a million times and it's always protected me.
Someone mentioned above that it doesn't protect against whiplash...but what vest does? You'd have to have something supporting your neck to avoid that and the vests, that I have seen anyway, don't have anything that would.
Not your neck I said in your back. You know when you snap your back. I have that flex rider vest and it literally saved my life. There is nothing restrictive about at all.

I have the Airowear and honestly forget it is on. If you order it from the UK, it's only $240 after shipping. (I think that's the final total) It's cheaper than the US and you can get it in colors over there.
do you like your back ?
then i would not get a tipperary.
honestly people complain that vests are so uncomfortable blah blah blah, but you honestly get used to them. i think flex rider vests are great for something a little cheaper and still very safe. i had one for years and years and once you put it on you forget about it.
would you rather be comfortable and stylish or safe ? vests that arent approved aren't for a reason.
