Dallisgrass Hay for horses?

Is Dallisgrass Hay ok to feed to horses? I'm looking for hay to buy for the winter and the feed store closest to me sells square bales of Dallisgrass Hay. I looked at it and it looks good, so I have bought two bales just to see if my horses will eat it...

But is it ok for horses to eat? Or is it a cattle hay?

I know nothing about hay excelt that the hay my uncle buys and feeds it full of sawbriars and weeds, and this hay looks very good, no briars, etc... It is baled by the guy who owns the feed store and is stored in a dry place after it is baled. I didn't see anything that looked bad.

Plants of Texas Rangelands Dallisgrass Ergot

I wouldn't feed it to horses.

Same here. It's even causing major problems in cattle. Go Google it......

Hm...

Ok then. I'll toss it over for the cows later and go to TSC to buy some hay later.

Sorry for the bad news.......it causes neurological problems, even in cows, staggers, falling etc. You can inspect it for odd looking seedheads, looks like it's "blooming black"......
Don't know how much your TSC charges for hay, ours here has only the Standlee mini bales, they are cost prohibitive! You can always give good straw and hay/alfalfa pellets:-)

It's ok. It only cost me 3 dollars a piece and I got 2 bales, so no biggie.

Our TSC store carries square bales, I think, for 7$ apiece.

Browse craigslist for some people selling hay then go inspect it. There are lots of hay for sale ads on my local craigslist.

I guess I live in the wrong part of the country....:/
Bought Timothy/Orchard, three string 90lbs bale for 21$ last week
The little Standlee bales are alfalfa or grassy alfalfa, 50lbs and 17$.......

I am doing so right now. There's someone selling Coastal Bermuda Hay in Albertville... Barn kept hay, hasn't been rained on, etc...

Is Coastal Bermuda a good hay?

Yup:-)
