"when kids are cribbing?"
Okay... So maybe not on wood but my three year old is chewing on his sleeves. Like suckig and chewing until the wrist is socked. I started putting him to bed shirtless but he then does it to blankets. Parents are saying .. its a phase... But any experience or ideas to curb this behavior would be great!
It has to be a phase, 'cause I can't remember seeing any teenagers sucking on their sleeves. But, no , I have no experience with that. I would have traded that happily for the son i had who wet his bed until 8 years old. Now, that was a lot of sheet washing!
He's most likely teething, molars specifically. It's awful but it will pass. My kids did it a bit too.
I love a squirt bottle for "unwanted" habits. Nose pickers, eaters really bother me but give them no warning and a shot of water catches them off guard. Worked wonderfully for me with some kids I watch!
It's a comfort mechanism. Like thumb sucking etc. I wouldn't worry much about it.

I used to do that to the ribbon on my baby blanket. I think it was a phase for me, but I remember it started to give me problems with my teeth. ( I can't remember what exactly.) And my dentist told my mum to cut the ribbon off.
If it really bothers you (it would bother me, the thought of the cloth in the kid's mouth makes me feel queasy...) then try something unpleasant tasting but not harming to skin. My first thought was something like a vapour rub - not sure what you would call it in America, the stuff you rub on your chest when you get a cold, smells of camphor and eucalyptus. That'll stop it, and it won't hurt him to touch it. It might not look amazing - but then neither does a soggy sleeve lol.
Have you asked him why he's doing it?
I dont like these sort of habits but it does sound like a comfort thing - not much different to a dummy/pacifier so maybe somethings worrying him - monsters under the bed etc
Give him some motivation for not doing it like a gold star on a wallchart with a little reward when he achieves a certain number of stars. Start out with something achievable
I have asked him why he does it and he just chuckles and says because or he wanted to. He doesn't do it with me other than the blankets at night. I only see him chew/suck on clothing with me .. rarely. Its when he is not with me. Single mom here, but we live with my parents untill I move in with my girlfriend out of state next year. It does make me crazy - ruining clothes and the fact that I do not know why he is doing it. He started doing it before we changed day cares last month so it was before any big changes were made. Its been a tough couple years for both of us though so I was thinking maybe he just finally is finding an outlet to stress? The funny thing is his school does not say anything about it. I put him in short sleeves today .. but its late fall here.. He can't go sleeveless for long!
I thought about a unpleasant tasting spray or something.. a reward program is a good idea.. I don't so much mind the blankets at night as much as the soggy/wet/germy sleeves at school. EW.
are you serious? That is how you discipline a cat or dog.
