Vet Question

I took tilly in to the vet today to get what ever she needed for shots and such. They gave her a distemper shot coupled with an allergy shot (to reduce the reaction to the first shot). Once we got her home, I noticed that she was very tender in that area, she cried when ever anything touched it, and now, some hours later, it's puffy. I tried to call the vet, but they are closed being it a holiday (they have odd hours today I guess). Is this something I should be concerned with? She's up and playing now like a crazy woman.. So I dunno?

Watch the area. If she eats, poops, and plays normally except for being sore, you should be ok. Has she had reactions to vaccinations before? Or was this a precaution?

The swelling should be less tomorrow am. If not, then definitely call.

This was the first shot that we have given her, we've only had her like 10 days, we waited because our other dogs had an appointment today.. So yea.

We ended up taking her into the emergency vet because her one paw started to swell, and the injection site was warm. They gave her some steroids and instructed us to give her Benadryl 2 times a day for 3 days. Poor lil puppy.

Some puppies are sore after given a shot to, sometimes they will
yelp if touched there, etc. I would just do some research on
side effects after getting the shot.

I just gave Maddie her first shot(s) (8 way canine vaccine) the 27th,
and I didn't notice any negative side effects. Now I have to wait
until she is 16 wks. to get her rabies shot.

Best of luck to you and princess Tilly! :)

16 weeks old to get the rabies shot??? LUCKY.

Our government here has some wierd ideas of when dogs should get this and that. With the rabies, the dog has to be at least a year old, have a microchip, and be up to date on all the other shots. Confusing... but we were only just now able to get her rabies shot. And she's 4 years old. *sigh*

Futurevetgirl, you can buy most vaccines over-the-counter, or through mail order. It may be more $$ because the dose is in a bottle for , say, five doses or more. But you wouild have your dog covered.

try to google up pet supplies. A good one is www.fostersmith.com.

Puppies I believe have to be at least 12 weeks old in
most states to get their first rabies vaccination. Also, In some
states it is required for puppies to get vaccinated for rabies
16 weeks or sometime after 16 weeks. I'm giving Maddie hers
at 16 weeks.

Also, for buying vaccines over the counter, that is what we
do, it is less costly than going to the vet here (you have to
pay for theshot, plus an $18 fee at the desk just for coming in! )

I bought Maddie an 8 way Canine Vaccine over the counter
that covers:

Distemper
Parvo
Adenovirus
Leptospirosis
Coronavirus
Canine Hepatitis
Adenovirus
Canine Influenza

All that in one little vaccine for $7.99! :D

I also plan on getting her rabies shot over the counter also.

But for everyone planning on vaccinating their own dog at
home, make sure you check for side effects the vaccination
may have on your dog before giving it to them.

Side effects for Rabies Shots Include:

# Aggression, destructive behaviors, separation anxiety and
odd obsessive behaviors (like tail chasing and paw licking)

# Autoimmune diseases, including organ disease, allergies and skin problems

# Chronic digestive problems

# Fibrocarcinomas at the injection site (particularly in cats)

# Muscle weakness

# Seizures and epilepsy

Hope that helps! :D
