I need a plan! Does anyone 'make' a plan???
Ok, so I've been getting after myself in regards to how EVERYTIME I get to the barn to ride....I arrive with a plan.....and leave not knowing what the heck I did...I get distracted easily, people talk at me while I'm riding, the BO harrows the arena while I'm riding (which is ok, I work around that, but it's a distraction nonetheless.) or some goon sits in the bleachers watching the whole time, it just never seems to go to plan......
I've started turning my phone off, as it always rings in the midst of something good!
How does a person develop a plan and some focus with so many distractions around? Aside from selling my house, moving to a farm and having my own facility I find I'm just treading water and not really getting ahead, slowly improving.........
I need some advice/tips on how to stay focused and to achieve my goals, or atleast have a good go at them without letting myself be sidelined by all these 'distractions'.....how do you tune it out and work with your horse successfully?
Is that the only time of day you can work?

An ipod. My bestie swears by hers. You can get one of those sports arm bands, plug it in, put your ear phones on and just tune in on your horse. Unless someone is pretty rude or really needs you, most people will let you be when they see the wires leading to your ears. Plus, it keeps you from being as aware of the other distractions. It's just you, the music and the horse.
Yes it's actually the quietest time of the day! And 'crazy barn girl' is not there, if she is there she rides around beside me yapping, , I'm polite.....but just get lost! Haha her huge horse will trot beside mine while I lope! Ugh!
I've thought about tuning in with some tunes....however I don't like being unaware of hearing stuff that could be important.....especially if there is someone in the arena with me, like 'heads up!!'......makes me a little nervous, kind of feel like I'm losing a 'sense'....hearing......
Sorry not dismissing, it's a good suggestion, just hard to implement with lots of activity around me....
Like the horse has to learn to ignore distractions while working so do you LOL
Story of my freaking life. My Monday ride was spent dodging teenie boppers that were either at a walk and on their phones or a canter buzzing around the arena. Great practice for the warmup ring, but not so much for trying to get anything accomplished with Ro. My nonexistant Wednesday "ride" was spent having a "yay, stand still for 2 hours, good boy!" practice session while we waited for the vet for my friend's mare. I feel like I have come quite far with Ronan since I got him late May, but then again have not progressed nearly as far as I would have liked....
Any time I've made some sort of plan beforehand, it's gone to crap...
You could try putting the ear buds in, but not actually playing any music. It will muffle the outside sound, but you'd be able to hear if someone was yelling something to you. Plus, no one has to KNOW you're not listening to music, so they may leave you alone more.
I try to pick 2 or 3 things to accomplish. Like opening and closing a 'gate', crossing a bridge, backing through the 'L', I like to do them early right after I get the horse warmed up. Those require some concentration, both his and mine, and I find if I get those 2 or 3 things done early I tend to be able to tune everything and everyone out except for if someone yells, comes off or I really NEED to tune back in. I can do that in a warm up ring with 50 other horses going all different directions and speeds, so I know it works for me.
I also don't like to have a set time limit, like I can only ride for 1.5 hrs and then have to get home or be somewhere, that breaks my concentration like no other. I get on, I start working and I quit when I've either accomplished what I wanted, or introduced something new and have reached a good break off point with the horse. Again, I'm just really zeroing on the horse. I honestly can't tell you how I make everything 'disappear' because in everything else, I'm SOOOO ADHD it's pitiful. I can't concentrate on anything else to save my sorry life but stick me on a horse and the world just ........... goes away for me. I've been like this since I was a young teen. I just get so wrapped up in feeling each movement, footfall, gait, pace....you name it, the whole world could be on fire and I wouldn't notice til I got so hot I couldn't breathe anymore.
To give you an idea how bad I can be, I'll be having a discussion with my husband and just lose track really badly and not even know it. He looks at me and says, "Butterfly......", as in I saw a butterfly and lost my train of thought, to try to break in and redirect me. Sometimes it even works.....LOL! Other times, we just have to laugh.
It's simple really, my plan is to not make a plan. I just roll with the punches and adjust accordingly.
