preventative supplements? yeah or neigh?

Do any of you feed your horse supplements to prevent things? my horse is 11 years old and like every horse owner, I love him to death and want him to live a long and health life. He does a touch of everything; trails, jumping, western...

With that said, can it hurt to give a horse a simple joint supplement and are there any other suggested supplements I should consider giving him?

depends on his diet, pretty much anything we give them that isnt grass is a supplement. What is needed and isnt needed depends on the grass it's on. Supplements like electrolytes, vitamin A, Biotin, etc etc are things crucial to a horses well being but are generally lacking at least part of the year every where.
However with that said. just like the human supplement market, the vast majority of what is out there is total snakeoil, and basically does nothing but get you to spend money. Alot of operates on the placebo effect if it does anything at all.
Generally quality feeds tend to have most compunds needed but we ususally dont feed the recommended amount especially if we have plenty of grass, we'd end up with lardbutt horses, I do a basic pasture supplement which contains biotin and Vitamin A among other things.

I agree with Joe4d- the best preventative 'supplement' is to provide consistent, complete nutrition on top of a forage-based diet.

That being said, on top of managing my horse's diet as best I can, I do give my horse MSM as preventative supplement for joint health. Everything else in his feed is to meet either nutritional or caloric needs, however.
