switching to western...tack questions?
as some of you who read my thread may know ive decided to switch jarred over the western rather than english even though hes a wb :) ive had enough of the english world with all its politics. ive decided to return to my roots (i learnt to ride in a stock saddle mustering cattle and while i dont want to muster cattle or ride in a stock saddle again i would love to get into western pleasure or even barrels if the big fella can get his bum around them lol)

i have a huuuuge bunch of questions to ask as although i have ridden western before it was a long time ago and ive forgotten probably all of what i need to know. im currently looking for a western trainer around where i live but unfortunately this is eventers country around here so im still looking.

in the meantime i figured i can get started. ive been looking at saddles, bridles etc and i came across this one. i know its not the best saddle but its a good start and it comes with everything incl. breastplate, bridle, blanket etc its all wintec, brand new gear and she only wants $400. i figure if western doesnt work out i havent spent a lot of money and if he does well i can look at a better saddle then

my questions are though:

- will i have trouble getting jarred a western saddle to fit due to his size? (for those who dont know jarred he is a 17hh warmblood)
- same with a bridle?
- what bit should i use? he has been in a training bit for english riding but what should i use for western or can i keep with the training bit for now? what bit should i end up with?

anything else other than bridle, saddle, breastplate, blanket & bit that i need to get started?

thanks a bunch. can wait to see jarred all done up in his western gear ;)

dammit! that one is sold :(

i found this one though. once again i know im not going to get a super dooper fantastic saddle for this price but its only a stepping stone to something better IF western goes well for us.

and some more i found. opinions on all these would be great. if i was buying dressage or AP saddles i would be right but western is a little foreign to me :)

thats all ive look at for now. can everyone who knows about western please give me your opinions on these saddles.

I would really hesitate to buy a western saddle off of e-bay when you already know that he's gonna be hard to fit.

There are some great websites about saddle fit and sizing...I would measure first...then buy.

Here is a website that has TONS of info on it.

Surf it over and then start looking.

I really am not a fan of the saddle packages....but I understand them too so as long as you realize that they may be crap and won't last and you are happy to pay a little now and then more if he takes to western then ok. Ya long as your eyes are wide open kinda thing.

As far as the bit goes...if you don't tell the horse he's not supposed to be in a western bit he won't mind using an English one!

Truley tho...I would ride in the bit that works for him. Once you find a trainer you can discuss with them what would be best to use as he advances in his western training.

thanks girl :D

yeah i am worried about fit thats why i liked the first package cause the wintec westerns have interchangeable gullets. i was assured by a few different places that the 'quarter horse' fit would suit him fine. so ive been looking for 'quarter horse' types :) i spoke to a saddler today and he estimated about $4500 for a custom made and for right now im not prepared to pay that much. a little while to see how things go and i will get a custom but if i can find one that fits for now id rather that ;) ive tried to choose ones on ebay that are in my area or an area where someone who knows what they are looking at can look at for me. its the best i can do at the moment. i dont want to fork out enough money for a small car on a saddle if we are going to end up back in a dressage saddle on a month lol but i get what you are saying as that is half my concern.

someone said the same thing to me today about bits. they said to keep him in what he is in until the same point where i would take him off the training bit for english but wait until i finally find a trainer and talk to him.

i found a trainer today that i am seriously considering. hes the futurities champ here in australia and from what ive seen and heard hes great. uses more natural methods for training and has a great rep for training champions. not at all cheap but he sounds good to me ;)
