Scared Horse-won't stop galloping
Yes, my horse is afraid of cows that are in the field next door. The problem is that he won't stop galloping. He's been galloping all over my field for over 30 minutes and he is completely covered in sweat, he's having trouble breathing and making wheezing noises. Now my field is covered in ruts and holes and branches scattered all over because there's a wind storm going on right now and he didn't stop galloping until the cows went back in the barn. Tried to sooth him with treats and pet him just wouldn't stop running and got scared when I tried to reassure him. The cows will be back tomorrow and he can seriously become lame or colicy if he continues this way. Help?

i dont have any good advice for you.. just wanted to wish you luck with your boy and hope he calms down soon!
my girl pranced and trotted around snorting for about 4 1/2hours the first time our neighbors brought cows home.. after about a day though she realized they weren't a threat to her and she just started ignoring them. good luck!!
If you think you can safely do this and you're up for some walking, when the cows come back tomorrow have him in halter and lead rope. Start out as far away from the cows as possible and walk him back and forth parallel to the cattle (not at them). After he is settled and walking calmly at that distance, work your way a little closer to the cattle always going back and forth. While you are doing this, keep yourself calm and relaxed and don't praise him or pet him until he settles - what you are saying to your horse by doing this is that it's just a normal day out in the field and nothing to worry about. Good luck.
I had a home bred TB that was terrified of cattle! If out riding he saw them then he was all for taking off in any direction.
The problem was solved when a farmer asked me to ride down the filed and herd his dry cows up to the gate.
In for a penny in for a pound as the saying goes! We went down the field hugging the hedge to keep as far away from the black and white monsters that were going to eat him! I got behind the cows and they started to wander to the gate.
The fact that the cows were moving away from him made him braver and when one cow turned and bellowed at him I just drove him forward fast and she cantered away.
That was it, he learned cows were frightened of him and he never bothered with them after that.
I hope you can help him work through this.
My OTTB was actually curious about the neighbors cattle. My BO thought he was going to bust straight through the fence the first time he ran towards it to check them out.
Wow I had never considered this! Not much to say other than I am surprised that horses would be afraid of cows. I guess from Reno saying that hers wasn't scared it must be a fairly common thing? Has anyone ever heard of it being an especially big problem?
My horses weren't bothered in the least by pigs. My pigs however used to chase snow machines which was kind of problematic for me.
ha! sounds kind of cute!
