Essential for Horsemanship

Just thought I would share a comment made by one of the greatest horseman in the world Jean Francois Pignon. He has an amazing gift for training horses and they will do anything for him. Anyway, he said that horses are flight animals and they see us as predators. It is up to us to prove that we are not predators but can be 'protectors'. He said that horses are 'scanning us' all the time, looking at our body language as we give off subtle signals which even we probably don't realise we are giving. He says that anyone who wants to train a horse well must do it with love in their heart.

I have used his methods with my two boys and I have to say that it works 100%. Due to the set up where I board my horses, I have to catch them in a field (20 acres) where they are members of a small herd. It is a long walk! Most of the other horse owners walk up to their horses, put the head collars straight on and lead the horses up the long walk to the gate and the yard. I call my two boys and they come to me and I greet them. A bit of nuzzling on both sides (LOL) I then turn and walk to the gate accompanied by two giant horses of their own free will. Once at the gate I have to put the head collars on and then they are taken to their stable. I always feel so priviledged that they put their trust in me and I would never, ever betray that trust.

I agree with what he said.
