Somehorse beat up my dear, sweet Ricci. >_<
I'm house-sitting for the folks that live next door to my barn. They left this morning, I came out late this morning and went out to play with the ponies. Walk up to Ricci and find this.
You can kind of see the swelling here.
Her assortment of battle wounds. I think they got her shoulder too, it's very sore when you touch it, but there is nothing visible.
The vet came out, sedated her, clipped away the hair, cut the flap off, and cleaned it up. It's a few days old at this point and really just skin deep. He said it was actually better doing it today than it would have if I called him out the day it happened, as it was just a matter of clipping off the dead skin. I'm to use an ointment of some kind to keep it soft, but she doesn't need an antibiotic or bute or anything.
Luckily, it is low enough that I could still put her blanket on. It's getting down to 30 degrees F and lower at night, and the wind will chill you to the bone. The barn owner is also willing to set up a stall for her as soon as the cows are gone [the 26th] so she won't get beat up again or kept out of the shelter of the barn in the bad weather. Fingers crossed that this month goes by quickly and without issue!
That is just plain lousy.
Are any of the other horses shod behind (or are they all shod behind)? The culprit appears to have been shod.
Nope, no one has shoes. My two are the only ones that even get regular trims. The likely culprit just has long, chipped feet and a bad attitude. -_-
Wow!! Bummer.....its already looking a lot better! Hope she has a speedy recovery!!
