Please help rather worried

Hi my welsh section d gelding is causing me concern he wouldn't move out the field yesterday and when he finally moved he was really over reaching his back legs to the point where his fetlock would touch the floor, he's not dragging them or anything just over reaching them, then I tied him up and he kept picking his back feet up and then holding them up and then putting them down (only 10 seconds or so at a time and only did it 3 times) then he stood there with his back legs really far apart like he was going to poo but didn't! He's also been holding his tail up high these last 2 days he's not lame in anyway so I lunged him walk he still over reaches trot was fine but canter his back legs just hopped along? Really confused I've got the chiropractor coming tomorrow but what does everyone else think? Oh I had the vet to him when I first got him because his back legs kept buckling and he would scare himself when it happened but she said he was foot sore and had nothing happen up until now.. Is it a back man job or a vet job? X

Didn't this horse founder awhile back?

Keeley57 11-14-2012 10:44 AM

Nooooo, I forgot to reply to you all! No I had the vet and she just said he was foot sore.. And had farrier 2 days later for a trim and he was fine not had a problem since that but now it seems to be the same but ten times worse, by the way he's moving I would say it was his hips but not a clue! Don't really know his past except he was backed as a 3 year old never fully broken and he's now 5 I've had him a couple of months!

Well you need a different vet for a second opinion. Sounds like founder to me if there's no neurlogical problem.

Keeley57 11-14-2012 10:47 AM

No she checked for neurological problems, what are the signs of founder again please? Thanks

It doesn't sound like founder to me if he's hopping on his back legs. Could be stifle issues, or even something with his spine if it's both back legs.

Either way, there's something wrong with this horse and he needs to be seen by more than just a chiropractor.

I doubt the founder...he would NOT lift his feet and wouldn't trot fine.
Google "upward fixation of the patella" and "stifle problem".... if it sounds anything like described, that would explain why he was okay after a trim....does he have long toes behind?

There's the thread about the overweight pony.

I've looked at the way they walk on YouTube and it doesn't look the same, it's when he cantered that scared me his back legs were so close together and he cantered with front feet and hopped with his back ones? Obviously I'm no vet but if I have no luck with the back man my vet will be called tomorrow I wont mess around.. He's not lame he's not limping even galloped round the field bucking its just so odd x

He's lost a lot of weight since I posted that and had vet and farrier out to him and had nothing wrong with him since then so I can't see it being that
