So, I legitimately have never had one of my own horses overreach. Ever. Until just recently. Horses I have ridden have overreached while I was on them or I've seen it happen, but it's never happened to me and my own personal horses.
Well some of you know Selena over reached and sliced herself up at the gymkhana Oct. 14th and couldnt be ridden for the week.
Today, Ruger over reached in the lesson and we didn't even work that hard. I was very surprised.
I normally ALWAYS ride with bell boots, but these two isntances I had an idea behind not using them and it's come back to bite me. Ruger isn't hurt or anything, just artificial, but now it's on my mind. I wonder how often they over reach, but I don't see it because the boots are on and not letting the wound show up?
What can I do about this? I want to talk to my farrier about rounding the toe more. I really think this is happening because they are advancing on the barrel patterns and really starting to dig in and DRIVE from that hind, even at the slow work.
