Bits usually rust purposefully. The horses enjoy the taste and it makes them salivate.

I prefer a rusted bit anyway ; 'cause it does taste better to them. :D
Anyway, that shouldn't hurt him.

What about just replacing the one that you have with a new one with a thicker mouth piece.

Have you heard of Myler bits? They have a patented design for tongue relief.

i have heard good things about the Myler bits as well all though, i have never tried one. from what ive seen with barrel racers, is that they think they need to get a special bit for their horse. i am running my 10 yr old QH on barrrels in a twisted wire snaffle. if i were you i would go with the easies bit you can find but still have control, every horse is different. i alwas borrow bits from friends to try and find one that works before i go out and put down lots of money on bits that may not work (around here, you cant return bits) if you re interested, i have 2 wonder bits that im selling. one has a smooth mouth and the other is twisted wire. PM if you are interested. im selling them cheap because i dont have a need for them.
