Natural Horsemanship vs. Traditional Training Methods
I'm writing a Composition research paper on the differences between Natural Horsemanship and Traditional Training Methods. I have a few notes:
NH Clinicians Overpriced Training Gadgets
People are led to believe that they are Master trainers because the read a book
Every horse is different, training methods should be altered for each horse.
It's not always YOUR fault, the horse can be at fault.
Have an understanding from the horse's point of view.
Training problems are solved naturally(no force, punishment)
Horse becomes more willing.
I was hoping that I could come to this forum to find a horse trainer that could answer a few of my questions, for the interview part of my paper. Thanks! :)
I think you have to define natural horsemanship and traditional methods a bit better. There are strategies that are cross over and their uses and intention is altered by the method. ex. laying a horse down. Natural horsemanship purist want the horse to offer to lay down as an extreme yield to pressure. While perhaps a "traditional" cowboy would lay the horse down via force.
Then you have methods that don't fully fit into either category ie. clicker training. Then you have those branches of training with weirdness such as friendship training.
Narrow down what you mean by natural and traditional.
The gadgets are subjective. You can buy a named brand anything or you can get a no frills generic version. The difference will be in the quality though that's not to say that the generic stuff is always junk. There's levels.

Hmmm you know something that's always bothered me is this "Natural" vs "Traditional". When I first got back into horses again and started looking around and educating myself on what had been going on while I was away, I was curious about this "natural" stuff. Come to find out, a GOOD chunk of it wasn't anything new at all. Just given fancy names to things that a lot of us did 30 years ago. Yes there are some new things of course, but a lot of it isn't.
So maybe for your paper, you want to look at what was done years ago vs what's done today and see if it's a simple name change with real great marketing or if it indeed IS something new.
