Blanketing. Yay or ney
How cold does it get before you blanket your horse? I saw some photos of another user's horse and it was un-blanketed while standing in 2 foot of snow eating hay. I live in FL, and I blanket my gelding if it get's cold enough to see my breath. Heck, I put his rain coat on when it rains! :-o

You live in Florida. I don't think it gets cold enough there to really worry about it. I'll bet your horse would do just fine without one.

I live in Virginia, and none of mine have blankets. They have stable sheets if the weather's going to be exceptionally cold and rainy and they have to be inside, but generally only my oldster needs one and not all the time.

I tend to just give them extra hay when the weather gets colder, and mine all stay fat and sassy during the winter.

My wife and her sister's horses don't get a blanket unless it's below 0. they do stay in most nights if there has been any snow/rain when it is cold just to give the outer layer a chance to dry off and then they are back out in the morning.

I just got my mare this fall but don't expect to have to blanket her any differently since she was never blanketed before here in upstate NY. will probably ahve to blanket the sister-in-laws gelding a bit more this winter since he's old/arthritic

right now we have 6" of snow mid to upper 20's and the horses are fuzzy and happy

I live in Northern WI and don't own blankets. My horses have free choice shelter but only choose to go in during the most extreme weather (bad wind chill, sleet, etc.).

I keep one horse at a boarding barn and the owner does blanket. He's on stall board which means there is no shelter in his pasture so he either has to come in or be blanketed in bad weather. So, that means I'll be purchasing my very first horse blanket after over 20 years of horse ownership.

I clip my horses so I can still ride in winter. Below about -20 I don't bring them inside to ride and below -30 they are blanketed to the hilt. Right now we're around 0f and I have a light winter blanket on, colder and I'll put a hooded one on, colder than that I'll put a heavy underblanket on.

In the winter, it normally goes down to around 20F-25F (never remember it going below 15F). Our mares are out 24x7, have free choice hay, a shelter, and are never blanketed.

I've lived in Fl and Ga and my horses have never worn a blanket, no matter the conditions. The one time we tried to blanket my barrel horse, he ripped it to shreds overnight, haha.

i blanket my horse who lives outside. i never used to until last year. she gets VERY very upset if she gets wet. it also helps keep her warmer as they basically have no wind block. they have a shelter but it is very small for their 30+ horse pasture. as in, maybe 6 horses top will go in it.

i think it depends on the horse and their work level over the winter.

I don't blanket unless a horse is sick. I haven't blanketed a horse in more than 20 years. It gets below zero (fahrenheit) here. Sometimes it stays that cold for weeks. Sometimes the tempuratures fluctuate wildly.

my fat and sassy appys have not been blanketed before now when living in the high desert (20's or so typically at night, sometimes less but not consistently). they will be moving up to to the rainy portland area next week (yay!!) and will have rain sheets for when they're outside (turnout in pastures during the day, stalled at night) just as they're not used to being wet all the time.

my thoroughbred gets a sheet when it's 45 or so out. then blanketing starts as it gets any cooler. he drops weight easily and needs the blanket even with a full coat of hair. suffice to say he has multiple blanketing options.
