Jumping with no stirrups? Show me?
Ok, today when I was jumping I was thinking about taking my stirrups off, but man, I must be weak, I could barely do a rising trot without my stirrups, canter and sitting trot are easy haha, but if I can't rise trot without stirrups how can I get off my pony's back over the jump without stirrups?
Everyone talks about it, so I wanna see it! Post some pics of you jumping without stirrups! In the meantime I will start working on my legs... 8)
well this isn't me my this is my best friend jumping with no sturrips . . . .the jump is 4ft http://www.horseforum.com/userpix/39...7044f668_1.jpg
Wow, she must have amazing legs! Hopefully if it doesn't rain on me today I will get some no stirrup work in, maybe start with rising trot...
So I just did it today, dropped my stirrups a couple strides out and went over :D
60cm one stride then 60cm
Any tips for me?
You're lookin really good Jaimie!! Keep up the good work! I'd just say keep working on it to build up your legs. =] and if you find that you're starting to try and grab your stirrups mid fence, take away the saddle. =P I found that without my saddle I was able to relax into my pony's stride [i won't work on leg strengh on gracie, she's too un-predictable right now] and keep my leg in place and build my leg up better. haha But keep up the good work! You're lookin great =D
I used to jump bareback ages ago, when I young and crazy, now I am always freaking out that I am going to fall off :S but hopefully after this jump club meeting on Sunday I will have time.
hahaha yeah i always thought that too. until I was forced to jump bareback with no other options. bareback trail ride:didn't know we had to clear the 3' wide creek. =O haha but it gave me the confidence i needed. haha But Just keep up the good work. You look awesome!
Can I offer some advice?
It looks as though your pinching with your knee over the fences, which is a common thing to do when your whole leg in itself isn't strong enough.
That is also why your back isn't flat and is slightly roached. It is a result of the pinched knee.
The only thing I can say to help this is LOTS of no stirrup work.
Go whole rides without stirrups, LOTS of posting trot with no stirrups.
Also, do a lot of ground pole work as well. Really work on your two-point with no stirrups.
Your ideal leg position without stirrups is a completely relaxed leg, that is wrapped around the horse. Your knee should be on the saddle, but not pinched or tightly. Just resting. Your whole leg should be wrapped around the barrel, with your heel down just as it is in the stirrup.
I can tell your knee is pinched in these photos by the way that your lower leg is flaring out, toe isn't down, and foot is also pointed out lightly.
I think once you get your legs stronger, your back will definitely stop the roaching. You look really good other than that and your horse is very cute!!
well I have not purposly jumped without stippups but I have accidentally jumped without them alot. I don't have pics though. the last time I jumped without them was over some 2' barrels and I was like oh well lets go no stirrups and just used my thigh mucles to hold on and I was fine. now I am not brave enough to purposly jump no stirrups yet but maybe in time...... like next week.....
Kudos to you girl! I'm sure if that were me I'd be eating dirt! :D
