Buying horses
I have been looking for a horse of my own for a while, and I recently got 2 offers for horses. I want a horse with good jumper conformation, and both have that.

1: gray quarter horse mare, 7 years, 15 hh. Well trained, started pole work. $450

2: bay thoroughbred mare, 5 years, 15.2 hh. Retired racer. $650

My friend says the thoroughbred might be a bad idea because she can only canter left lead, and right lead is hard because they run around the track left, and that they just want to go, go, go!!!!

Anyways, what do you guys think? If you need any other info about them, let me know.

Have you ridden both horses? You can't make any decisions without trying both, and probably a few morse too. If you can, bring your trainer/coach along too. They could probably tell you more than we could because they can see the horses first hand.

Good luck, I hope it works out for you, whatever horse you choose! Just remember, DO NOT settle for the first "decent" horse you see. Make sure it is 110% the horse for you, they are HUGE investments and are normally hard to sell, especially with the economy the way it is.

If your just a beginner then I would go with the Quarter Horse. If you are advanced and you can handle a OTTB then you could consider the TB.

TBs are trained to run, and thats all they know at that point until they get bought out to a new owner who retrains them.

Quarters can be GREAT for jumping, but so are TBs.

Just depends on your level of horsemanship and how much experience you had with horses, especially green horses or OTTBs.

I am going to bring my friend and her dad (who are very knowledgeable about horses) with me when I go look at any horse. I haven't gone to look at the horses yet, but I will soon.

Yeah, from what I've heard from the owner, the quarter horse seems like the best match for me. I will look at both, but the quarter horse is my first choice.
